M400 Brown Tortoise Vs Standard M800

So I have finally decided to go for the M400 brown tortoiseshell. It will be the first premium Pelikan and hopefully it will not disappoint.

As I mentioned earlier I have 2 Pelikan M200. I am perfectly okay with the size but given the choose I would want to use a bigger slightly heavier pen. I don't have a M800 but I do have a MontBlanc 146 with a brass piston and find it the right size and balance for normal use.

I very much liked the idea of dickkooty2 that I can think of it as a perfect example of a M400 in my growing collection. There is no doubt that it is possibly the best looking M400 that can be bought today. It also looks better that the standard M800s.

Thank you guys for the wonderful perspectives. This is a wonderful community.

Regards

Jatin

P.S. - Any suggestions for inks to pair up with my new purchase

Yes. Pelikan Brilliant Brown 4001.

There are a zillion ink colors and a million of them are brown. Enjoy a very nice color pairing of pen with ink at a place in time.

My favorite browns are MB toffee and J Herbin Lie de The but there are many great options.

Have both the M400 and M800 in brown tortoise and much prefer the size and feel of the M800!

Me too, and I have small hands - size 7 gloves! That said, my M400 white tortoise is lovely to use and look at, but my M800 tortoise still eclipses it.

Passionate people are using a lot of judgemental words, such as 'better' when it really is a matter of personal preference rather than absolutes... as in 'it feels better for me.'

There are so many variables to take into account, as mentioned already. I don't write constantly, so the fatigue factor doesn't enter into it... it's more about comfort in the hand. Which is why so many members recommend people go where they can pick one up and see how it feels.

Glenn.

I am certain it will not disappoint. Please come back and tell of your experience with your new acquisition. An M400 tortoise is only surpassed by a Pelikan tortoise from the 1950s and earlier. Those nibs are exquisite.

Some one cut my reply to large hands...I have 9 inch span and consider that normal for 6 footers...it is not a large hand. My span fits a standard or medium-large pen just fine.

Does help to post such pens for the balance.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

I do have very large hands (about 9", I'm 6'7"/200cm).

This made me think I mis-measured my hand size since it's very rare I find someone with larger hands. Turns out my hand span and circumference are both about 10.125". I have no idea how I measured 9" the last time. I think I tried measuring from a ruler on my computer monitor which in hindsight was a poor idea.

I have two Pelikan M400 brown tortoises: 80s "W.-Germany" model and the 2016 re-re-re-re-release.

They are both among my favorite pens, and IMO, neither model is superior to the other, they are both great for different reasons. I would sell a lot of pens before I ever get rid of these.

I've tried the M800 and find the M400 to be a better size for me, and better for carrying around.

I wouldn't say no to a M800 brown tortoise, though...

10.125"....just under QB minimum size. Some 10" QB's in the draft took hand stretching exercises to get 1/4th of an inch more................odd, they had no trouble throwing in HS and Collage.

I could see how that could make a difference more than my 9".

I'm grateful my mom never let me play football; I got hurt enough playing basketball and I need every IQ point I can muster.
