Blue Inks In A Mb 146 Broad

Bonjour -

 

having experienced some stops / drying out with BayState Blue in a 146 90th anniversary edition Broad nib, I tried some other inks in addition to the bottle of J. Herbin Éclat de Saphir on hand.

 

The Éclat de Saphir looks the most vibrant after BSB, then MB Royal Blue. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi Bob,

I agree with you but would like to add that these are all very nice blues.

Have you tried Caran d'Ache's idyllic blue?

My personal favourites are Montblanc's royal blue and their permanent blue even though it looks a little impure and dirty to me... like ink coming out of a bic pen.

 

I have read that bay state blue performs best in a pen that is dedicated to it. This ink does not like mixing with others.

I've risked some BSB in a cheaper pen, but I would never fill one of my Montblancs with it. Has it stained your pens ink window?

 

I like the look of your PI Asa-gao That's an ink I once had but don't have anymore.

The FPN seller of the pen posted a sample he wrote with Montblanc Lucky Orange.

In memory of my devoted friend and companion Lucky the Jack Russell Terrier, who went across the rainbow bridge on June 2, I bought a bottle of Lucky Orange from Anderson Pens.

After trying Lucky Orange in the 146 this afternoon, I decided to hang on to the pen.

Bay State Blue performs well in my 149 with an O3B nib and two Pelikan M800's, and did well in a Montblanc 146 that I regretfully sold a year ago. For some reason, perhaps the tuning of the nib for the prior owner? the ink flow stops in this 146 with BSB. C'est la vie.

I believe at the time this photo was taken Lucky had lost weight because of his illness.

 

Bob, did the flow issue in your 146 emerge suddenly and unexpectedly?

What have you already tried to address it?

Mr BlkWhiteFilmPix,

 

I had a lot of trouble with Lucky Orange in multiple pens with flow (1914 Heritage F, 149 EF, 149 F, 149 B 146 BB all showed the same symptoms). The ink dries up in the nib quite quickly. In some cases I found that it would dry up after 30 seconds without use! To fix this, after filling I inverted the pen, twisted the piston half a turn or so towards empty, added One to Two drips of water into the feed, and pulled the watered down ink back in with the piston. The color is close to the same as it was originally, but it now will no longer clog the nib

 

It also took me a LONG time to clean the piston fully of Lucky Orange. I was doing the fill with warm water, wait, flush and repeat process for around an hour before the water was clear again.

 

Thus, I named it unlucky orange and don't use it very often anymore even though it is a stellar color.

Thank you. Yes, he lost a lot of weight due to mitral valve leakage and congestive heart failure.

 

I think he was down to just about ten pounds the day he left us.

Thanks Grant, I will do that. It has to work better than constantly feeding the flow by turning the pen a half turn to empty every couple of pages, which is what I'm currently doing. It did that with Baystate Blue and éclat de Saphir, too, so I think its the feed / flow and will ask Indy Pen Dance to look at it at the DC Pen show.
