Sheaffer Skrip Blue Black (Modern)

This ink really surprised me and is just gorgeous. It's definitely something black- I don't know that I would call it blue black- more like teal black or green black- it has a really classic vintage look that I just love (AND a water resistance that shocked me as it's not generally thought of as water resistant. It's not water proof, and Pilot BB wins if it were a contest, but this ink could very well survive a liquid spill which is my goal when it comes to inks for writing.) It also seems pretty well behaved, but I haven't been using it for very long. A surprising amount of shading even in super fine nibs. Bleed/show through on cheap paper is on par with Pilot Blue Black- present but not extreme.

This is a very nice, and often overlooked, vintage-looking ink. Thank you for reminding us of its qualities. :thumbup:

Could you please compare the feathering of both inks on cheap paper? If my memory is correct, Pilot BB tended to feather a lot.

I don't have any of the Worst Paper Ever that we use at work (seriously, it'll all but suck the ink out of a pen)- and sometimes half of a page will be fine and the other half will explode all the lines...even the ink that the printer itself lays down feathers! I don't know where they get this stuff, they must seek it out. However, I do have some cheap legal pads that I test everything on.

I tried to compare them with similar nibs (Wearever Steno for the Pilot BB and Pilot Metropolitan for the Sheaffer). It looks like the Shaeffer feathers a bit more. I can always take my Metro to work and test it on the Worst Paper Ever.

The Pilot ink is about twice the cost of Sheaffer. The Pilot ink looks more like a blue, so there are different interpretations of blue black, offering some choice.

Pilot comes in a larger bottle, so I'd say it's half again the cost (which compared to many inks, still isn't much). However if you're using gallons of it, you can buy the big 350 ml bottle and get it for a fraction of the cost ounce per ounce, making it effectively dirt cheap.

Verdict: on (bleep) paper s

Sheaffer BB is a little more feathery (part of that may be a finer nib scratching the paper). The real surprise is that the Sheaffer BB is almost entirely resistant to alcohol, while Pilot BB is not.

Shipping?

The Sheaffer BB ink looks blacker than the older type of Sheaffer BB ink. I don't like it. The Pilot BB looks bluer than I would want. So, I would keep shopping. I am getting used to having to get the manufacturer's black to add to the BB or to violets, reds and purples.

I have used some of the Pilot colors. They are okay. Sailor makes a greater variety of Japanese inks in more gradations of color through some kind of specialty shop or shops. They usually get the colors dark as I want them.

At least one on Amazon is fulfilled by Amazon and eligible for free shipping.

I'm really loving the sheaffer BB. It may wander into my EDC pen for a while.

In another thread here there is a post that recommended starting with Pilot black and adding about ten drops of Pilot Blue Black and adjusting to taste.

I would guess you would have to use Amazon Prime to get the free shipping. At my age, one regular bottle is as far into the future as I would project.

I'd like to see a comparison of vintage Sheaffer BB to modern BB. I'm guessing they use the same formula?

Much have I travell'd in the realms of gold,

And many goodly states and kingdoms seen;
Round many western islands have I been
Which bards in fealty to Apollo hold.
Oft of one wide expanse had I been told
That deep-browed Homer ruled as his demesne;
Yet did I never breathe its pure serene
Till I saw "Sheaffer" spelt right loud and bold.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

You can spell it any way you like Sheaffer, Sheafer, Sheefer etc but this skip blue black ink makes me smile and lightens my brow every time I use it - it's my favorite ink. :-)

This has become my daily ink at work for notes due to its peculiar property of being fully resistant to both alcohol and mineral spirits (which I am highly likely to spill on my notes). Water makes the green component run but it still remains legible, so it's all good.
