Lamy 2000S Are Overrated...

I suspect your Lamy experience is more typical of the average than the experience of the OP. I only have my own experience with Lamy, but it has been nothing like that described by the OP. I find my L2K to be an excellent writer and my first choice for an everyday carry pen. I concur with suspecting the fault more likely lies with the retailer.

Sorry to hear about your problems OP. I know it retails for a whopping $350 here in Australia, thats why I bought mine from Peters of Kensington in a 2 piece pack (with a bottle of ink) for $270AUD.

But definitely NO - I totally disagree about the pen being overrated. And Dymocks Sydney city always gives great service over the counter. I have seen people come in with pen problems and get looked after more than once. You could have left it with them and they would definitely get it repaired, the people in the pen section are experienced folk.

Edit. Superglue in the piston section, skipping and now the clip just twisted and you are still having filling difficulties. Hope the pen writes well.

And no, we don't talk with that stupid slang. What do some of you think that we I walk into Dymocks and say "struth, bloody nice pens!"? Because we don't. I never hear people talk like that. Even the truck drivers won't talk like that.

I have had the 2000. The pen was so perfect that it became almost boring. My great regret is having traded it for a Parker 51 set that is also perfect. It made me wish for all those C/C pens that have been such a pain for drying out, like the Lamy 2000 and Parker 51 do not.

There was a time when I thought fussing interminably with a pen was to be expected. No longer. I am ready perhaps to revisit the Lamy 2000. I have lots of Sonnets, a few Carenes and Phileases and other stuff to offer in trade to someone else bored with a fine or EF 2000.

Furthermore, I had not heard of Dymock's until this post; so I had no idea if they were above reproach or the most contemptible retailer in the free world.

Dymocks is an long-established Australian chain of book retailers, they have stores across the nation both company-owned & franchised. Majority of their stock is books, each store only small sections of other complementary items like stationery, reading accessories, office gifts etc

Most small stores don't carry pens, even Melbourne city big store doesn't... but I hear Sydney's city store (corporate HQ) has a decent pen counter, was an early seller of iroshizuku... lucky for sydneysiders.

They're a full-service bookstore. Good place to browse if I've got a few spare hours, always discover a paperback or 3 I'd like to read. Pop into most stores I pass just to see if they sold pens, but found not much down in Melb.

Heh!

On a personal note, I used to be jealous when Sydney's Dymocks had a pen counter & our didn't.

But then my brother moved up there & works just around the corner :P so of course I get to 'see' what's up there... but still have yet to make a purchase, everything's at RRP so I'm not tempted.

Think babybro is getting infected by FPs too... said he bought a Safari last month :D hehehehe

I like the Lamy 2000 admitedly its design isnt for everyone then again design is really subjective... much like I would say I dont like 146/149 for that matter so theres that or the CdA 849 FP... god why does it look so childish yet so expensive...

I don't know whether Lamy 2000s are overrated but my Lamy 2000 Makrolon in Fine nib is the only pen that I can't keep out of rotation for more than a week since I got it in mid 2013.

The ones that are offered for sale in the classifieds are quickly snapped up.

  • 2 weeks later...

Phew...

I got a bit too lazy to reply since the questions were coming in were mostly the same. Sorry. I think we can move on until Lamy gives me news about this.

I heard about the Matt from The Pen Habit once said in this video, if you don't know about Lamy2000, you probably new to the fountain pen Kingdom, welcome.

Lamy2000 has been available since 1966, and it still remains today and has earned a good reputation among the fountain pen community, when there is a demand so there must be a supply.

Some people really don't like the nibs because of the sweet spots, no wonder, just leave it and buy another pen because the pen main functions are to write out of the box.

Different people have different preferences of the pen if you don't love it, like it or use it then no matter how the good reputations of the pen have it or the price is vain for you and the pen.

What an interesting thread. So you bought a pen, dropped it and damaged it, then the retailer refused to repair it for free, as you have effectively voided your warranty. This "incident" (which in reality is common practice literally everywhere in this world) makes you believe you're on bad terms with the retailer. You went back and bought a Lamy 2000, clip of which you have most certainly mangled by not being careful enough, then decided there's "glue" on the piston knob and soaked the pen in alcohol for an hour.

You don't have to send the 2000 to Lamy, I can guarantee you they will not cover your mistakes out of their pocket. You just seem clumsy and not really careful with your belongings.

Nice title, though, but you probably shouldn't have posted more than OP, as with every new post you add new bits of pieces to the story, showing more and more how this situation is in reality your fault.

I've had a dozen lamy 2000s and 26 of their nibs and they have been all perfect without missing a beat.

As simple as that.

A phenomenal pen indeed....

But not for some of us, (at the moment.)

I just can't deal with the feel of the pen, that's all.

And I have been lookin' for a P51.

I was looking for a used 2000 when I saw this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LAMY-2000-Fountain-Pen-Black-Extra-Fine-Nib-L01EF-No-ink-/162512603807?hash=item25d6818a9f:g:PdgAAOSwcaFZFMWq

I figured the price was right, about as much as any black pen is worth. I am not a major aficcionado of black pens. So, I bought this (ugh) black pen.

You are right. 12 year olds like me aren't escpecially careful,I know. Let's not get into a heated debate about this.

Everyone has a learning curve about pens. Sometimes you destroy them or damage them. I don't believe the Lamy 2000 is overrated.. It's one of the better pens available. Perhaps it's better to not buy a pen if you don't feel you can comfortably write it off if some mayhem occurs. People singing the praises of a pen can also raise unrealistic expectations..

Yes. I have heard far too much good about the 2k. Even if mine was in perfect working order,I doubt it is as good as people tell me.

Oh,and, Lamy got my clip fixed without charge, the pen no longer skips, and they threw in some nib tuning too! Quite impressed with the service!

Awesome stuff! As I've said before I really like mine, and it gets a fair amount of abuse. The clip is starting to wiggle, but I catch myself playing with it in meetings so it's probably my fault.
