A Pen And Ink Log

Tom Kellie

Recommended Posts

Two questions for y'all (before I start logging as well):

- How did you choose the notebook (the paper of the notebooks I've got is quite different from the papers I do most of my writing on...)

- When refilling the same pen with the same ink (immediately or some weeks or months later), do you make a new entry?

I didn't specifically choose the notebook. Mine is just a cheap nasty freebie from somewhere, I use it only to check what's in what.

I use this method on loose A4 sheets to recall how inks look on the paper I sketch with:

No, I do not repeat entry. A good few of my pens are more or less married to an ink so I don't bother.

~ KaB:

I've never consecutively refilled any pen with the same ink, so all entries are new.

As shown at the beginning of the thread, I selected a small, pocket-sized student notebook.

The paper quality was above average, with almost no sign of feathering or bleed-through.

Judging by the outstanding posts in this thread, there are various approaches to an effective pen and ink log, all of which work.

I hope that you pen and ink log will be as satisfying as mine has been during the past few months.

I have recently started keeping a log similar to the above using Matt Armstrong's "Currently Inked" notebooks. For those who have not seen it, it is a small passport size notebook with boxes for your ink log. Though the notebook is more constricted than a blank piece of paper, the simplicity and pleasing layout is something at appeals to me.

That's a great approach — practical and attractive.

I like the way that it's arranged.

Thank you for sharing the image of your layout, which gives me several ideas.

Your sketch makes my month!

There's a watercolor-like quality to the ink jars.

Your technique is unknown to me, but I loved it upon seeing it here.

Such creativity nudges me towards increased inventiveness.

Thank you so much for your posts and images.

They're a joy to see here!

Wow. That is beautiful!

I just use the back page of my current all-purpose notebook to log inks. Clearly, I am a slacker. ;)

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I use an small (8.25" X 5.875") ruled Black n' Red book for a similar approach. I am not very consistent, but when I ink up a new pen or one I have not used in a while, I put a writing sample on the page. I often describe the pen a bit and test nib flexibility. I also note the ink I used and the date.

Here is a photo of today's entry. Sorry it is not an MB. I don't have any inked right now.

I am still obsessing over that pen after having played with one in New Orleans six months ago. One of these days I'll pull the trigger!

Two questions for y'all (before I start logging as well):

- How did you choose the notebook (the paper of the notebooks I've got is quite different from the papers I do most of my writing on...)

- When refilling the same pen with the same ink (immediately or some weeks or months later), do you make a new entry?

- I use the Midori insert for mine (because I mostly use Midori + Rhodia paper).

- If it's the same ink, then I consider that the pen is still in its original rotation and don't make a new entry.

~ The approach shown above by Tas-the-Graphophile has remained in my thoughts.

As this week is a National Holiday in China, there's time to experiment with pens, watercolors and paper.

Several ideas await testing on paper.

The concept of sketching an ink bottle to display the ink is just right. Tas inspires with clarity of design.

No matter the outcome, it'll be enjoyable to see what colors might express, in the lovely early October light.

My 17 week-old Pug puppy, Zuji, continues to support my writing with his affectionate, comical presence.

Since 2003?

That's inspiring!

Do you use any special format?

Yes. I started doing that when I bought my first MB (Jules Verne) pen in 2003. Since then I do that with all my currently used pens - six 149s plus YOL Viceroy Grand. Nothing special, someone could say it is childish. :-)

If you are interested I can e-mail you a picture of a page (I have got your address).

Thank you so much for explaining what method you've used.

As it's served you well for many years, it's impressive.

Yes, please. If it's not too much trouble, I'd be grateful to receive an image showing a page.

I've learned much from seeing how others record their pen and ink usage.

It is a play, Tom. We both are in an age to afford to enjoy that play, aren't we? Mail just sent.
