Cross Ballpoint Pen Repair

Got a silver regular Cross ballpoint pen. Problem is, it wont twist to open. When I pulled the top from the bottom, the insert, if you will, came out. If I push it far down into the barrel and then use it, it will work, two, three times before It then will not twist to open

I know I can send it back for like $20 to repair but I was wondering if there is anything I can do?

I am having trouble visualizing that you can remove the inside mechanism.

Try a drop of alcohol right at the body/insert junction. Then let the alcohol drip down into the mechanism to soften the old dried up lubricant. That worked for one pen that I tried it on.

I will see if I can explain better. The part where the replacement ink refill screws in, that is the part that came out of the bottom barrel. If it was held in with glue, or hard pressed into the barrel, it is stripped or come unglued. It can come completely out. It has some ridges like it would screw into the barrel. Because it has no friction or glue to hold it in place, when the top portion of the pen is attached and you twist it, it causes the inside of the unit to twist complete around, and not just the pen refill. So it does not open or close. Now, if I sorta jam the insert way down to the bottom, there is a bot of resistance, like there is that little spring mechanism in place. Then for a few times, it will twist to open and close correctly but then that insert makes it way up and the, no friction so no open and close.
