Pen That Can Take Abuse.

I am fairly new to the fountain pen world but have gone through my fair share of pens while searching for something that works for me and my life. i am currently looking for a pen that can take some abuse.

 

My work and life destroys almost anything that comes near my pockets. I have snapped several Lamy Safari's in half, crushed more Jinhao than i want to admit, broken 3 clips on my kaweco alsport and 2 on my Lamy's and in an unfortunate welding accident melted a hole through my pants pocket and directly through the middle of my Noodlers freebie eyedropper that i got with a bottle of ink(I topped it off that morning). All of this is within the last year and a half and just to show some of the damage below is what all has survived the last few months in my pockets.

 

So far the only pen that has survived has been my Kaweco alsport but the clips are all too flimsy and bend straight out after a few weeks. not to mention that i had to add a copper plug to keep the cartridge from popping out inside the pen and super-glued the clip in place to keep it from falling off when clipped onto my pocket.

 

Does anyone have any recommendations for a metal pen that screws closed with a tough clip. Something a little longer than the alsport would be nice but not necessary.

 

Also does anyone else have any horror stories of destroyed pens. I'd love to hear them if you do.

Good heavens, man! What in the world do you do for a living entailing that kind of abuse!

 

Anyway, you're probably going to want to go in the direction of a metal bodied pen. A Karas Kustoms springs to mind. I'll shamelessly mention that I have an all metal Levenger True Writer for sale in the classifieds. You could also go in the direction of the Lamy 2000 in steel, which is reputed to be (I haven't tried one personally, though I love my traditional 2000) quite the tough customer.

 

The one trade-off of a pen of that strength is that it's likely to be heavy in the hand.

You want a pen similar to the Kaweko, that has a cap that overlaps the body when closed. The longer the pen the easier to break in half.

 

I don't know your profession, but if you want to carry a fountain pen, you need to adjust to it.

Frankly, I do not see a fountain pen as practical for a hard environment.

It it like the best writing tool for a carpenter is a BIG pencil, not any kind of pen.

I have personally found the cross century 2 to be a rock of a pen. Quite slim though.

Hhmmm.... you're either in construction or you have an office job in Jersey.

 

Either way, I think I would echo the previous recommendations for a Karas Kustoms fountain pen. Brian Goulet threw his across the parking lot and I've seen them literally driven over and they keep on writing. They come with a lot of nib, color and material options, too.

 

Here's hoping it's only your pens that get beat-up, pal.

You might be better off looking for cheap disposable pens rather than something that can stand the abuse if you're getting through them like that?

(It does sound like a good job you had a pen in your trouser pocket during that welding accident, though...)

Welding and metal pens seems like a no no. I've personally always wanted to know just HOW "unbreakable" the Visconti Homo Sapiens are. I bet you could find out, lol.

 

Edit: but just to be clear, I don't actually think you should get one, lol. Stick with some of the other suggestions!

I'm not sure any pen will stand up to the kind of abuse you're talking about!

 

It sounds like you know some tradesmen, so why not get some custom work done? Find a metalworker who can put some steel cladding on your Lamy

Maybe an ebonite something or other in one of those pen sheaths that you wear around your neck--tucked into your shirt.

I don't often make this recommendation, but I will in this case. Use a pencil or disposable ballpoint at work. Leave your fountain pen at home.

I am a Transportation Specialist / Facilities Technician. I drive a school bus and am a maintenance man in between for a small school district. One building. We do everything from minor bus repair to building new stuff. We weld, grind, build new wood pieces, etc.

I have 4 of these. They're great pens. I really like them. And yes, they will stand up to a beating. The Lamy 2000 makrolon also comes to mind

I once had a red Delta 365 which I was so frustrated with that I threw it across the room. It survived. Does that count?

 

I really didn't like the pen; a hard starting dry writer which was uncomfortable in my hand. It was eventually traded for several third tier flexible-nibbed pens. I thought I got the better of the deal.

No, there does not exist such a pen.

Rotring 600 with lava finish. It's an eBay only pen, but they are available there, even NOS. Rumored to be indestructible.

Another option, since the clip is an issue, get a belt holster for the Kaweco.

Actually, you might could get a raw aluminum Sport, have it type III anodized, eye dropper fill it, wear it in a belt case. That eliminates the clip and plastic breaking and the ink cartridge coming loose.

At least, I think the type III anodizing should sufficiently prevent corrosion from ink. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
