+ what Chris said.

Also, after a long time on my 70 year old feet, it's nice to go to the room for a half hour. Then back to the hunt.

Amen to that. My 66 year old feet are not far behind. They like a rest every now and then.

Can't wait for the show. I really thought that the show was not happening this year

I'm excited-- this will be the first year I'll be in DC during the weekend the penshow is hosted, thanks to summer work. Guess I'll be able to see how it compares to the LI Pen show now

Should be a great show, as always. As a frequent traveler, I can confirm what a previous poster believed, that WIFI is free at all Marriotts if you sign up for their rewards program. It takes 5 minutes and costs nothing. If you travel often, you can also earn free nights. Anyway, see you at the DC show!

Ditto to this. I know it to be true because I use it

Yes. It is one of the reasons I try to stay in Choice Hotels instead. Free breakfast too.

I just checked rates. Less than $200 to fly, but $100 to train. I think I'm going to train it. Plus, that gives me an opportunity to read and practice with any new pens.

The Marriott rate includes buffet breakfast for two people. Asked about estimate for Uber rates from Alexandria Amtrak station, about $15-35 depending on traffic. Also could take Metro to Falls Church, where I believe they have a shuttle, but it's a long process. I will probably drive down from Philly as I did last year, especially as there is no place to eat within walking distance.

So bummed that I can't go. :crybaby: That's smack in the middle of when I'm going camping, and there's no way I can do both -- I have too many commitments (including my choir performing, and since I'm supposed to be in a select group piece for this concert, it would be really rude to bail to go to DC for the weekend when we're supposed to be having our final rehearsal).

I'm seriously torqued by the change in venue. The show moved from a location a 4 minute walk to a metro station to an alleged once an hour shuttle (on Facebook they said every half hour, DessertMaker55's message says the hotel claimed every hour on the half hour). I live a block from Metro's Red Line (White Flint), and it'd actually be faster to get to the Baltimore venue than this place in the middle of nowhere (Washington Metro's info page says no train or bus service). There don't seem to be any other cheaper hotels within walking distance either. I'll go for one day only (I went for three days in years past, when you could actually get to the venue by mass transit),

The reason there are the problems you noted are related to the area. It was a convenient suburb 40 to 50 years ago for a family to stay in on vacation. I remember it with motor hotels, family restaurants and a quick drive to the Mall with a reasonable amount of parking. I think there were meters then with free overnight parking on the Mall. I think there was pull in diagonal parking adjacent to the Mall and the Capital building and it took about twenty minutes of light traffic to get there from where the hotel is located.

What this means is at the time the Metro was being planned and initially built, that area was not targeted due to a lack of density and it being well served by car. I doubt back then few planners thought Northern Virginia would have the level of growth it did in the late twentieth Century. I remember back to the period before the Metro when much of Downtown DC was neither well loved, or well maintained. A period when people looked back to the 40s nostalgically before the City was "malled". No one said DC was dead, but outside the Federal District it sure wasn't pretty. The profit that has been made on DC's redevelopment must be incredible.
