Ripple Micarta

Two of my favorite pens are the Waterman 94 Ripple and TWSBI Micarta. Unfortunately, both are out of production. So, for fun, I decided to make some micarta pens that "cross" these pen's properties. Shown are my first attempts at Blue Green, Orange, Rose and Olive Micarta TWSBI sized pens. Shown with them are the inspiration pens.

I like the Green one the best!!!... But the Blue and and the Red Brown are my second choice....

Thanks so much for you comments! The brown/orange and green were the last ones I did. I am learning how to select colors and how to cut the micarta to maximize the contrast. The material is predominately cotton canvas but linen and some cotton twill are also included.

I used "Bondo Fiberglass Resin" by 3M.

Beautiful pens, I did notice a difference in colour at the threads. Is this because threading them on this material shows a slightly white colour? Or is it because the threads haven't been polished?

Thanks. When the material is machined it raises a fuzz from the cloth component. Depending on the tool process used, the whole pen exhibits this until polished. Because the threads can't be actively polished , this fuzz is apparent there. In my experience, use of the threads polishes them and the fuzz becomes less apparent over time.

What do you think would be good color combinations? Cotton canvas fabric shops offer quite a selection of colors.

I actually like both combinations -vlinear and mixed, and higher contrast rippled (though I think that probably this one may enhance the colours best). You did well in using both in your first batch.

 

Colour wise, maybe you could try some yellow, dark orange, light blue...
