Week #17 / 23 Apr: Dear Ink-Abler - 2017 Weekly Ink Project

Recommended Posts

Say thanks to many enablers out there who are so kind to share their passion with us. For this week, use an ink or sample that's been gifted to you.

As usual, don't forget to share with us your choice of ink, your writing, drawing, doodling or anything with the ink in this thread. You can take a photo, make a scan, or even better, write letters and CRV reviews (what is a CRV?) and mail them to the many ink pals here. You are welcome to check back on this thread even when we've gone past this week.

Click here to read more about this community project. Links to the two previous links can be found there too.

The Walt Whitman looks gorgeous visvamitra.

I knew this weekly ink project was going to be a disaster.
I've managed to hold out until now but I've bought four bottles of ink in something like 7 days :(

Wholeheartedly agree with Visvamitra: our community here is incredibly generous. I too have received many ink samples, and making a choice was not easy. Anyway, here's mine:

I would guess that about half the inks I've tried have been gifted to me by kind folks here. When a friend of mine was feeling a bit down about how shallow some people can be, I used the good folks here as an example of why he shouldn't let them discourage him - there are plenty of very kind and generous folks out there.

Sorry, the color is off (again). I'll figure it out eventually. The paper is Rhodia Premium, if that helps you mentally adjust the color...

I'm liking this ink more and more as I write with it. I think it must be lubricated - it feels really smooth to write with. :)

It sounds like one to look out for. Is it a kind of pale reddish brown?

I would call it a medium reddish brown. (But pale, medium, and dark are so subjective.) The pink is more obvious when you first write with it - before it dries. Anyway, whatever it is, it's really nice to write with and works well on lower quality paper.

I have been the recipient of many great inks over the past couple of years (sincere THANK YOU to all —you know who you are!), but two stand out for how much I love the inks, and use them every day:

The J. Herbin Ambre de Birmanie came out very different in the two pens I tried it in. A Pelikan M200 Cognac with a fine nib is very gold/yellow and in a Jinhao 599 with a stubbed M is very red orange....

These were among samples arrived last week in the Spring sample pack.

Wow. Interesting variation in color. The Dark Lilac has always been highly variable, according to how wet or generous the flow. The greater the flow, the darker the ink, and more prominent the sheen.

But the radically different values of Ambre de Birmanie? I have no explanation for that. Strange!

These are all inks that were recommended to me by FPNers or gifted to me by FPNers.

You know how I LOVE Sargasso Sea —now that you've brought it to my attention! It's like birthday presents in a bottle! :D

I think it was the Modern Gent who turned me on to Sargasso Sea. I didn't love it the first time, but I do love it now.

I agree completely with you —I never liked the color or scent of that ink either. But the look of it with a music nib is really terrific.

Have you ever tried the violet, rose or orange-flower scented inks? I find those have a much more pleasant fragrance, but they tend to be too "thin" and runny, and feather a great deal even on good paper. Guess you can't have everything! ;)

No, I haven't tried them. I don't tend to like scented inks and other than the 1670 series of inks (all of which I love), I'm not a great fan of J. Herbin inks as I tend to prefer my inks to be wet & saturated.

I'm thrilled with it in the Platinum with a Music nib and will now use the ink more and more.
