Thanks! I particularly appreciate this coming from you, your excellent essay on the Lamy 27 was a great help and inspiration to me! I am still missing the all-gold model, I have never seen it again except in your pictures.

I remember that collection, unfortunately all the best things were gone by the time I got wind of it...

You're welcome, and thanks for your compliment on my Lamy 27 write-up. :) If you are hankering for the Lamy 27 all gold, there's a version in a barley-corn gold treatment that was up for sale in the Classifieds back in February, but was later pulled. The seller may still have it (Christof). Beautiful pen... and I'd have bought it for my collection if I wasn't financially strapped.

There are still some great pens to be had, if you keep looking (especially on German eBay). But it looks to me like you've gotten some of the best ones, especially the metal cap 27. I see you've got a couple of the standard "torpedo" shaped ones (domed cap top), including the later "m" variant. Also, I see you have the 27 32 with the "L" logo in the gold cap top. I love that version... my favorite one of all vintage LAMY pens. Is yours with the rounded bottom end, or with the inverted cone? I have both versions -- I should take some photos to show the minor differences.

Nice collection and interesting discussion.

Is there a pictured timeline of the different Lamy 27 somewhere to find here on FPN? If not, we could make one. What do you think? I could start with the very first version of the 27 with a matching advert:

Nice idea, Christof.

If you do, and others like it, I'll transfer this post later to a separate 27-topic.

I'll try to help. I have a couple of curious versions. One is actually stamped with "C. Joseph Lamy" on the body, done in normal "LAMY" font style, so it's original. Sadly, I got the pen with a missing nib, so I'm on the lookout for a replacement. It has squared off ink windows as opposed to the "ellipse" style windows.

One other curiosity is the Lamy 99. From what I can see, they were offered as an inexpensive alternative to the 27. And while it looked to me like they were all plastic in body and cap, I ended up with a Lamy 99 with a metal cap! I'm not sure how rare those are... but it's a curiosity. One telltale sign of a 99 vs. 27 is the clutch ring, for the press fit cap (versus screw cap). The 27 has a thicker one while the 99 has a very thin one.

Thank you Myu. Just started a new thread here:

PS: I already started some investigations here: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/220855-whats-up-at-christofs/?p=3816594

PPS: I had a 99 with steel cap as well. Don't think they are that rare. And, I could help you with a replacement nib if you wish.

I'll try to contribute in your thread as I can. I've been composing a timeline on different Lamys over the years, but as you say, info is not always easy to come by. Mostly from adverts etc.

But I must admit I am more focussing on having some info in all models, rather than detailed info on one. I lay be of little help.

I love the colour of the 27 in your picture by the way!

Help? Why am I buying so many fountain pens?

  • 3 months later...

In the pictures there is the Orange All-star missing, I forgot to put it in the picture. As far as the safaris are concerned, I think I am only Missing the Terracotta orange, I don't have that one unfortunately.

Of course, there are a bunch of more specific models which I don't have. The Al-star Bastian Schweinsteiger comes to mind, or the special Edition made for the NH Swedish malls.

I think it's personal choice whether a collector wants to collect those or not. For example the special safari's made for the asian market, I have some of those, others don't interest me as those are basically a standard safari in a different box.

So you see, the question whether the collection is complete is not all that easy to answer ;)

Congrats on your stunning collection!

Do you know if the Al-star Bastian Schweinsteiger is just the Aluminium Version with an imprint?

I know the answer to this.

It is the classic AL-Star without any coloring. It is just printed on the pen. Most likely pad printed.

I have one - quite used and beaten up, but it completes my collection.

Thanks Astron! I'm trying to gather all Safaris-based (so also All Stars and LXs) in the grayscale. If it is a LE, it only counts as long as its color is different from the regular production ones. I think the following ones complete this collection:

Al Star Black

Safari Black

Safari Umbra (same color in old and new ones, I think)

LX Ruthenium

Al Star Graphite

Al Star Aluminium

Safari Griso

Safari White

Safari Alpin (matte white, black clip)

Hope to post some nice pictures of it soon!

If you guys know any other that matches the criteria (Safari, Al Star or LX in grayscale), please let me know!

Please, I'm trying to keep it under 15 pens... :)

If Joy enter the scene, there would be:

Black/Aluminium

White (discontinued; I think it was a SE)

Black (black clip; discontinued?)

Star Wars White (black clip)

Corrections are still welcome.

Don't know about the colours. I don't collect colour versions of pens, so I don't take notice of these things.

More interested in a nice model, and nib, and then choose a good colour available at that time.

Narrowing the focus is important for collectors if you have limited funds, space and don't want to end with thousends of pens. Also the collections get's more interesting if they follow a sub topic I think.

While the Safari is an interesting pen, I only collect the early colors and from the new ones, the ones with textured surface:

Excellent criteria, Christoph! And your collection is stunning. I really like the sober look of the textured versions.

It seems that all the textured versions have black clips. Is it right? And for now (counting only FPs), are they only 10?
