Um I found an article online reviewing the original. Seems the cracking of the plug area is a actually a feature of the original that Jinhao copied.

I was wondering if the crack/disintegration problem occurs also to the non transparent version of this pen.

It might be possible that the solid colours crack less due to a different plastic mix used. Any experiences?

I have a royal blue 992 that developed a crack around the circumference of the cap, just above the band.  The pen is now useless as a writer, but I can use it to practice nibwork.

I have three units and in my case the area sensitive to cracking is the housing. In two of the pens, that problem occurred. The nail varnish seems to work well.

Is this cracking issue still affecting the current production?

I have one of these which I have been using for about two weeks in eye dropper configuration. I really don't want three ml of iron-gall ink in my pocket.  The pen is pristine by the way, and I really like the way it looks and writes.

It's an issue even with the original. Best not eyedropper

  • 2 weeks later...

@Tony1951 I waited a few years before buying thinking the cracking problem would be fixed with later batches. Interestingly a few of my pens cracked at about the same time. My blue, black, and red copies did crack. My ivory (2 copies), green, and grey ones did not crack. Most cracks developed in the cap but my red one also cracked where the threads are on the barrel. Since then I've been using these pens now for about 4 years without incident but I wouldn't use these as eyedroppers.

Yes - I suppose you are right, Mine is still in eyedropper mode and the barrel is perfect right now, but I will probably revert it to using the supplied convertor.
