Jinhao 992 Informal Review

There seems to be a little disagreement on this point; some reports of international cartridges not fitting, some reports of Pelikan 4001 cartridges (which are international sized) fitting, albeit very snugly (as in, after use in the 992, the mouth of the cartridge was too big to use on a Pelikan). For my part, I think I'm going to toss a Diamine cartridge set into my next JetPens order, and take my chances. If I can't get them to work, I'll be happy to pay the carts forward to people who might like them.

Please let us know how the Diamine carts work out ... otherwise I will have to order Jinhao Cartridges ... wait a month to get them before I can give out the pens.

I got two transparent 992s, blue and clear, last week. Before ever being used both show small cracks when examined with a loupe. I hadn't noticed them before I read this thread, but I'm not going to eyedropper them now.

I filled the converter in the clear model and it writes perfectly. Very smooth.

To those with cracked barrel ends, you could melt some candlewax and pour it into the barrel, deep enough to cover the cracks. Once it has cooled, you would have a plug that would stop potential leakage. For extra brownie points, you could dye the wax before you poured it in to match the colour of your barrel.

20-odd years ago, I sealed a cracked inner cap in a Sonnet with candlewax, and it is still going strong.

Anyway, I have one of my own (transparent black) on the way, so I may have to put my money where my mouth is when it arrives. By boat. By slow boat. By very slow boat...

Oh, absolutely. Not sure when my next order from JetPens will be, alas.

Thanks for the review. I just recently discovered this pen. It's quite a nice writer right out of the box. Nibs are smooth writing, and the ink flow is good. I bought 6 initially @ $1.89. Every single one wrote smooth and wet right out of the package. I'm impressed with this little pen. Size wise it's comparable to an M200, a bit thicker with a cigar shape.

The only down side, if there is one, is that it is very light in weight. But, it fits so snugly in the hand it's hardly noticeable.

I just placed a larger order for giving as gifts.

Would anyone out there with one of these pens and some standard international cartridges be so kind as to try putting one in their pen to see if it fits and writes?

I've been using a new Pelikan cartridge, which is definitely a short standard international size, in my 992 for a week and the pen writes perfectly. I just had to push the cartridge in a little harder than on some other pens. I'm hoping mine isn't just a fluke.

I haven't been able to find anything in a language other than Chinese. The Chinese name for the brand is Huijing (绘境), but I can't find anything about it. The pen is for sale in China and probably Taiwan as well, but doesn't seem to be available to the non-Chinese speaking world.

Let me try to explain this in a little more detail, Jinhao use Hero standard C/C and that mean a 2.6mm inlet throat diameter, international standard is 2.4mm ( some spec say 2.5mm ) its almost always possible to squeeze the international cart into the Hero spec section. And yes once on it will cut the throat open to 2.6mm thus its not possible to use it on yet another international cart C/C spec pen, but typically one do not switch cart and the cart stay with the pen until used up so that was not much a issue. In short, yes you can use international Cart ( and some converter ) on the 992 or any Jinhao or for the matter most Hero and Chinese pens with this spec. just knowing that you are squeezing that extra 0.2mm bit OK

The name actually is that of the stationary store, so this is a branded pen the store selling under its own name , aka OEM branding production of yet another iteration of this same pen we all are talking about here. There are quite a few of these

If you glance up-thread you'll see I tried a few different standard internationals and even Gullors and mine did NOT fit. Yet Mech-for-I tried the exact same cart as I did, and found it fit.

Frustrating, and a mystery.

At this price, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a fair bit of tolerance inconsistency between examples.

Sidenote, and apologies if you mentioned this and I missed it: did your 992 come cracked, or did the cracks start appearing after normal use? My pen came in a padded envelope, which I don't expect is proof against much violence in the post -- I was relieved that it didn't get damaged in transit.

A reasonable question. Having been caught out in the past, I automatically crawl all over new acquisitions with a loupe as soon as they're received, and if there were cracks from the start, I utterly failed to spot them.

Well OK I just put a J. Herbin Cart onto my Clear 992, and it go in without any fanfare, straight, and it write perfectly fine .. hope this helps

Experience leads me to urge some caution over those Herbin cartridges in Jinhaos - they can have an unhelpful habit of splitting at the mouth rather than stretching.

How did you get the plug out??
