My Interview With Neil Degrasse Tyson

Thank you very much for going to all the trouble of arranging the interview. It must have been an awful lot of work. Many thanks also to Dr Tyson, who was a hugely informative and entertaining interviewee. From a viewer's perspective, it was entirely successful.

Since you asked for additional people to approach, I'd have to enthusiastically ask you to stick with the Neils: Neil Gaiman (one of my favourite contemporary authors, since Sandman and Good Omens).

Does Rick Wakeman use FPs?

All I know is that years ago I read an interview with him after he left Yes. He said that the difference between him and the rest of the group was that they were mostly all vegetarians, and would be happy with giant balloons of mushrooms over them on the stage -- while he'd be having a balloon of a giant cheeseburger....

Oh, and apparently he did the piano arrangement for Cat Stevens for "Morning Has Broken".

He does indeed. He's a collector as well as a user.

Interesting about the cheeseburger as on his twitter feed he makes reference to constantly trying to lose weight.

Great job, David! It's a shame Classic Pens didn't give you the Juipter to present to Dr. Tyson as a gift. Great fun to watch!

That would have been a nice gift...that model sells for $2,000! It is being returned to Andy next weekend at the ATL show.

Yeah, I knew it was that price, but I thought maybe the prototype would be easier to part with and think of the publicity it would have generated!

Yes, well, that interview I read was in the 1970s, IIRC.

A lot of us have gained weight since then... (of course I didn't hit 100 lbs. until after I started college).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Speaking from experience, the more I eat cheeseburgers the more I think I should lose weight.

How wonderful! I love him even more (loved his show and will never think of Giordano Bruno without the beautiful cartoon from the show) seeing his enthusiasm--and will definitely check out his book. Thank you!

Found the interview by accident (popped up in a social media feed as suggested viewing) thought I would watch a quick minute as it was getting late and I had an early morning the next day. Ended up watching it all the way through, completely enthralled.

Since then I've used a few hours of free time watching other videos on your channel. You do good work sir! Thank you for such interesting content.

I finally got a chance to watch this, and I definitely enjoyed it! And I now want some of the pens he has except it will be a long time until I can afford them...maybe I need to get into a publish a book, buy a pen cycle like he used to have.

He's certainly a Type-A guy - in every aspect of his life I would guess. Thanks for pulling this off - it was fun to watch!

I'd love to see a Rick Wakeman interview if one could somehow pull that one off!

any info on whether Wakeman & Lake ever chatted their mutual interest in Fountain Pens? That, would be an interesting interview too!

  • 1 year later...

I watched this last night. I had watched it before, but wanted to again.

Dr. Tyson has the same rule for nibs I do. Trouble is, I have not stuck to it. But after watching the interview again, I might finally stick to it.

I had tried to buy a Pelikan White Tortoise on amazon.com twice. Each time the pen was returned to the unknown seller. Another member here bought from same and did get his, but it had a fine nib. I do not like fine nibs. I could get the white tortoise on the Cult Pens site, for a little more money, with a broad nib.

Or I stick to my rule. Retro 51 now has a 1.1mm italic nib. There is an Edison pen I’d love to have, and their italic nibs are good ones. I own four Pelikan pens (six if you count the Twist and Pelikano), only one Edison.

Dr. Tyson and I have one pen in common, and that is the Visconti Cosmos, but mine is purple and his is blue. We also started off with the same brand, Waterman. It was a fun interview to watch.
