Anyone Tried A Wing Sung 698 Demonstrator?

I just realised that the pen has a big ring near the piston knob. Does it post?

No it does not post, unfortunately. However, I find that it is not too small and has proven to be a nice fit in my hand.

I just got mine today. The filling is really easy and smooth, not fiddly at all like I was worried it might be (I'm new to piston fillers). The EF is very fine, similar to Pilot Metro F, but it feels way smoother writing with it than the Metro. I'll probably be using it for practising Chinese characters until I can get a broader nib in it. :)

I really like it. Even the bit under the nib is opaque. Not posting doesn't bother me. The size is spot on.

I do agree the size is just right; and I would not want to post it even if it can be. Still, I am not one who is too keen on the clear feed which seems to be quite a fashion these days, apparently they do not offer an alternative black feed which, I think, would make the pen looks more balanced. Caliarts, however, offers a black feed as optional extra for the Ego though.

EDIT: Found a Taobao vendor who offers black feeds... might get some! Apparently they are standard on the solid colour versions.

No, I am not going to list my pens here.

Let me join the chorus of praises.

I too, bought mine on the recommendations here on FPN.

Couldn't be happier with my purchase. I went for the .5mm nib and it's an absolutely perfect writer.

I feel a bit stupid, but need to share this anyway : I was not aware that the piston nob needs to be pulled out first with a very tactile snap. So I was twisting the damn thing this way and that until the piston knob and the top part of the rod came off and I was left there cursing under my breath the fact that I just wasted fifteen bucks on this pen.

Real men don't read (or google) directions, so I put the pen back together, eventually discovered how the knob was supposed to work (actually it's a nice safety feature now that I think about it) and have been using it on and off ever since. Actually thinking about getting a few more.

I have one question which perhaps someone here can help me with.

What do you do with the silicon and when/how often are you meant to do it?

I am thoroughly enjoying my 698s. Laid out my TWSBI Ecos and my Wing Sung 698. Though I am partial to broad and 1.1 stubs, I am enjoying both the .5 mm. soft fine nib on the black 698, and the Plumix med. italic on the demonstrator.

Silicone grease?

Lubricates moving parts like screwtread and helps seal rubber parts like the piston; it doesn't get dissolved by water/ink. Regrease when necessary.

The 14K version is being sold on ebay by a particular seller and for a third the cost it typically goes for. I'm not certain it's legit but I haven't bought it myself since availability never seems to dip below 5 for very long, the seller's last feedback was from over a year ago, and those previous sales had nothing to do with fountain pens, and at least some of the seller's other pen auctions are similarly low priced (the Duke Confucius). It's guaranteed by Ebay but I can't think of a legitimate reason these pens are priced so low so I'm waiting for more feedback to come in.

Does anyone know what size nib the 698 has? If I wanted to replace the 698 nib with a Fude nib which model should I be looking at?

I would be extremely cautious as all the feedback so far is for the buyers, not the seller. This looks like a classic scam. At least wait for the first feedback from the buyers of this seller. The seller says 46 have been sold, so feedback should be coming in soon.

Pilot Plumix & Pilot 78G nibs fit on the 698. However, I'm not sure if they make fude nibs.

Indeed. Looks like the seller left all their inventory in Shanghi. First and last pics, last night. Middle two pics, this morning.

I didn't buy from that guy just because he hasn't had any sales of pens in the past year.
You can buy off jewelrymathematics which is who I went with. He's also recommended by other guys on this site.

I love my 698. It writes like a Pilot Metropolitan (because it uses the same feed and converter). This is my go to pen.

I just received my Black Wing Sung 698 from jewelrymathematics and am very pleased. The pen is really smooth (soft fine nib) and buying from Mr. Guo is always a pleasure. He has always carefully packaged the pens he sends me to ensure they arrive in perfect condition. Attached is a photo showing the bubble-wrap cocoon he sent the 698 enclosed within. The postal service could have dropped this off a roof and the pen would have survived. :D

I've only seen this pen with an EF or a F nib.

The F nib is like a Lamy EF nib.

I have a F nib pen inked with Sheaffer black. It writes well, but like all EF/F nibs is sensitive to the texture of the paper. Using less than smooth paper will make the writing feel scratchy.

It is advisable to use a DARK ink with these narrow nibs, as a medium shade ink will look faded, due to the optical illusion of a narrow ink line. The illusion is that your eye sees more paper than ink, so the ink tends to look lighter in shade. You need a DARK ink to compensate for this optical illusion.

With this pen and the Caliarts Ego, the TWSBI Eco has stiff competition.

Yes. Ordered one in extra fine from Vanness Pens. It costs $24, five or more dollars than other sources, but I received in couple of days vice a couple of weeks to the Washington, DC area. Well worth the small extra cost to me.

Inked it with Rohrer & Klingner Dokumentus dark blue and it wrote straight away and is exceeding smooth. Not just for an extra fine, but very smooth regardless.

I like it so much I ordered a second this time a black body and with a fine nib.

  • 4 weeks later...

They really hit it out of the park with this one. Just came back from 3 weeks of vacation, left the pen on my desk.

Ink level stayed the exact same : no loss to poor seals/evaporation and started right back up.

I might just order me 5 or so more ...

I just received mine today and it is PERFECT. I ordered one with a Fine nib and I can't describe how pleased I am. For me, the Wing Sung 698 is definitely worth the buy.

The TWSBI Eco that I have is nice too, I can place different #5 size nibs, from EF to B and italics. But the Wing Sung is also great too, It is true that the pen cap cannot post, but who cares, honestly? Eco does not post that well either.

I so much like the fact that both the pen cap and the piston turning knob are transparent. And when I get bored, I may even try a stub nib from a Pilot Plumix. Here is a picture of the two pens together (top one is Wing Sung 698, lower pen is TWSBI Eco):

I've sold all of my TWSBIs except the Micarta and I don't really miss them. Now have 2 698s including one with 14k nib.
