Pelikan Edelstein Smoky Quartz

Thoroughly reviewed! Thank you! ... No question left open. I have recently tested Smoky Quartz with my very unprofessional and clumsy testing methods and came to similar result. But at the end, after all there remains the vast realm of taste and preferences, and there it came out that Smoky Quartz is in my eyes quite nice but I prefer Sailor's Jentle Ink Doyou.

Outstanding review! But this just isn't my color.

I've seen several smoky quartz threads and I just wasn't interested enough to click on any of them. I clicked on this one out of boredom. I am shocked out how nice this color is. It kinda reminds me of tobacco. Thank you for the excellent review. I'm going to buy a bottle tonight. 😀😀

This is an interesting impression in my opinion and opens interesting point of view on this colour... which may change my mind...

I love this ink, esp in my Pelikan pens so I ordered my 2nd backup bottle so I'll never run out of it.

I think Pelikan really needs to get over themselves when it comes to how much ink they give you for what they charge. Gimme 50-60ml? I might buy. Ask $20? I'd definitely buy.

In a thick, wet, broad nib, I notice no real color or shading difference between this and J. Herbin Lie de Thé

Having been chiseled by PhotoBucket, I now decided to redo the optics of my ink reviews. So -- thanks to the possibility of uploading images to the FPN host here instead -- this is my first attempt to get things back on their feet.

A great review of Pelikan's best Edelstein ink (IMHO).

I am a fan of brown/sepia/chocolate inks, and this for me is a contender for the top slots in the brown ink range- to be compared with Iroshizuku Tsukushi, Diamnine Chocolate Brown and Herbin's Lie de thé and Terre de Feu...

The maddening thing about Pelikan is the way they produce wonderful things for a limited time (obvioulsy a good marketing strategy, as it creates a need etc.) but I wish Pelikan would add this ink to their permanent collection. As a precaution, I confess to having 'hoarded" several bottles,- a sufficiently large number in fact to last me many years, as I write in this splendid ink constantly.

I found two bottles of smoky quarts on amazon for about $18/bottle. Snatched them both up.

As a brown/sepia lover, I was kind of lukewarm on this ink at its advertised US price of ~$30/bottle. I resigned myself to not buying it, since Lie de thé scratches almost the same itch.

But then I found a vendor on amazon selling them from germany for $17 USD shipped. I decided I needed it in my life and bought three bottles.

At ~$20/bottle, this stuff is amazing. Great shading, great manners, meaningfully water resistant. very professional. at $30, it doesn't impress. Funny how that works.

Getting senile can be expensive. After organizing my inks, I found that I bought back up bottles of this ink more than once. I have 5 bottles & then got another at the Pelikan Hub.

A great review on a great ink. Splendid range of tonal variations (shading, if you please), works for very dry pens too. Lubricated elegantly - not in the same manner as Iroshizuku.

Please make this ink a regular production.

I never even gave it a thought it could be similar to Herbin Lie de The`. Now I will have to ink a pen with Herbin Lie de The` and another in Quartz.......it'll give me an excuse to clean pens in my to clean cup.

And to see if I need a second bottle. When one is retired one learns a new word.....!@#$%^&budget.

I really enjoyed reading OP's review. I have three bottles of this ink and was wondering if i should sell because I'd probably never finish it all. Your review has convinced me to keep them all. The ink is wonderfully behaved and i actually like the colour! It was the water test that sealed the deal. I've gone out of my way to specifically purchase water resistant inks, so this is a very pleasant surprise.

I have three bottles too, because I panicked when I realized this is a 'limited edition'. I hope they will last me long enough. (On the other hand, there should be storage space in my home for other things too besides brown ink.) The best would be that Pelikan decides to un-limit this limited edition.

I went to my B&M to see if they had the 200 Ruby Star....didn't, sold it on Saturday, so I ordered it in B, and bought a bottle of both Olivine and Smokey Quartz.

I do have most of both, but got replacement's while they were still there.

PS, as I remember I got some shading, or I'd not bought it again.

Lamy should take a note from Pelikan on limited edition inks. There's still plenty of supply for Pelikan's annual Edelstein special editions, unlike for Lamy's on many older colors (that are not even that old).

To be biting, lemmee just say that Lamy is not all that interested in dealing with inks. They cash in mainly by selling their pens.

What's the point of limited editions if the manufacturer does not make it a truly limited production run, such that customers who don't jump in, when the opportunity presents itself, to secure their "share" and stock up for their foreseeable needs will experience the consequence of either missing the boat or running out?

I understand some consumers don't like playing that game, but then they "should" — for their own sake — take the stance that limited editions are not for them, and they will only choose from "regular" ranges of consumables for their staples... not that producers of such could not go bust or otherwise exit the market without giving sufficient advance warning.

Being a consumer, who is reliant on stuff produced by others, carries inherent risk of being denied satisfaction and/or having their needs unmet by the market. It's not something that will be, or ought to be, eradicated, in my opinion.
