Hi everyone! Nice to meet you, I am Dario from Italy. My interest has arousen after discovering a pen from my grandpa.

It is a Waterman's bought in the 1940s, gold fining 18kt with the classic mark "Waterman's, Ideal, Us, Pat.Off. 2 etc". Could you help me identify it?

Hello and welcome to FPN. :W2FPN:

Your pen looks like a vintage Waterman's overlay pen, but I don't know exactly which model it is. Someone will.

Ciao Dario,

is there any number printed on the back of the pen?

This number should identify the model, whereas the overlay could be original from Waterman or a custom job done by the importer or from a jeweler (there was many at that time doing this type of work).

I think that this may be a Waterman's 42 Safety, it would have been an old pen when it was bought in the 1940s.

Here are the instructions on how to fill it

Thank you very much guys! You have been truly helpful.

I do not have the pen with me but I remember that the code started with a 4, so if the nib is a size 2 it must be a 42.

The instructions of the safety pen seems to apply correctly.

I think that the exterior was hand made by a goldsmith because I read it was common in Europe in that period.

I also think that with the information available it is impossible to find the exact year of the pen.

I have one last question: given that the pen is absolutely perfect in its Waterman's parts: the nib is new as are the plastic parts.

How much could be the value?

(I am not thinking of selling it, instead I thought of taking it to a goldsmith to repair the exterior gold finish, wash the inside with tepid water as recommended by the instructions and put it on display as a memory of grandpa.)

If it is a display item, I would not have water near the pen, leave it as it is.

For the value, I have seen a similar pen on sale at $1200, around 1100 euros, it may not have sold at this price but that was the amount on the ticket.

As always the value is what someone will pay and in view of the connection to grandpa, it may not matter too much.

  • 1 month later...

Is the casing hallmarked 18ct or 750? Or was that just the nib?

A necessary correction: the pen has a mark on the side, near the bottom with the engraving "Waterman's, the usual globe, 18 kr"

On the bottom side of the cap is also written "18Kr"
