What Bottle Of Ink Did You Just Finish?

As a follow-up, I wanted to illustrate what a nib looks like inserted into an Edelstein bottle. The pen shown is a Pelikan M800. The challenges to filling a pen directly from the bottle as the ink level drops even a little bit should be obvious.

What is particularly annoying to me is the curvature of the bottom of the ink vessel that obviates the utility of the wide mouth, so that no matter the angle the pen is inserted, filling the pen is not easier. The bottle designer was even so clever as to put generous radii on the sides of the inside, so even tilting the pen out-of-plane does not help. It is almost as if the bottle was conceived to make filling directly from it distinctly difficult.

This is surprising from a company that has been making writing inks for almost 200 years and has demonstrated it is at least theoretically capable of designing practical ink bottles…

That has been my experience too.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Does finishing a Sengbusch Self-Closing Inkstand count? It had Carter's permanent blue black from the 1950s. The refill will be Superchrome, but a color hasn't been chosen yet, red, green or turquoise blue.

I just finished a bottle for the first time ... but by accidentally spilling it. After I picked the bottle off the floor - and after cleaning the floor, chair, my pants, and my beagle puppy's newly violet snout (as a result of the splash, NOT from her trying to lick it up, thank goodness) - there was enough remaining in the bottle for about half a fill.

Does it count?

You decide! (But I sure am curious to see your dog's snout 🙂 )

It doesn't count - but still good enough to mention here, I think. 😉

Unfortunately (or fortunately?), out of fear that the violet wouldn't come out if I wasn't quick to wash it off her snout (plus everywhere else it managed to splash), my priority was not memorializing the event with a pic.*

*It washes out of beagle puppy hair easily and, if I ever do a review of the violet color from the Ostrich 2018 flower series ink, I will be sure to mention it ... and perhaps even consider a limited, controlled re-enactment (but, alas, I will have to buy another bottle and she will no longer be a puppy ...).

Looking at other entries maybe it should.

What's the big deal about polishing off a whole 30 ml? That's an ounce, whoopee.

The Sengbusch Self-Closing Inkstand in use holds four ounces, 118 ml. 😱 It was filled from a one-quart master ink. Must all 32 ounces be used to get credit because the inkstand doesn't have a screw cap like a puny one-ounce bottle? 🙄

Maybe the problem is the ink in the inkstand isn't the original container🤔

It is self-closing after all. How many one-ounce bottles close themselves? Just leave the lid on the desktop to see how long it takes for it to jump up and spin itself onto the bottle top. Evaporation makes it so much easier to polish off one of those regular ink bottles instead of the Sengbusch self-closer. 🥴

Just wondering if maybe it's time to consider a broader definition of "bottle" if a measly 30 ml gets credit when 118 ml doesn't.🧐

FYI, the Sengbusch Self-Closing Inkstand was refilled with vintage Sheaffer Skrip washable black, #632, also from a one-quart master ink. I'll post when it's four ounces is empty, again, probably in a couple months. Also working on a NOS four-ounce bottle of Parker Superchrome red, instead of one of those later three-ounce wimpy bottles. (Feh, one-ounce dilettantes. 😋)

I've only ever finished two bottles, neither of which I shared here when I finished them (doh! ) a couple of years ago at this point. I finished my first ever purchased bottle, Waterman Serenity Blue, and my daily driven black ink that I used all through college, Noodler's X-Feather (4.5oz). I've not replaced either one, yet, though I may in the future. I've been using fountain pens for almost a decade (🤯) and have only used up those two. I could finish more if 1. I wrote more and 2. I purposefully finished/used a bottle. I don't write as much as I did when I first entered the hobby; I was in undergraduate studies when I found fountain pens and am no longer a student (🙌). Anyway..

I don't know what my next bottle would/will be...if I ever do finish another one (I have more than I care to count).

I have done this hobby / enthusiast for almost two years, and I haven't finished even a single bottle. Ever. Guess that's just the way it rolls...

Stay safe,

Ha! I was just this morning celebrating the fact that I had to tilt my very old bottle of Waterman Havana because it's only half full now that I started this hobby a little over a year ago (it didn't become a hobby back when I bought the bottle) and is no longer deep enough to get the very large nib on the pen I was filling far enough under to fill it. 😉

MV Sapphire, only the 2nd time I've finished a bottle. It was only 30ml (and still have about half a sample vial worth). I have another bottle ready to go.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

To be perfectly honest, I've only ever finished one bottle of ink.  That was a bottle of Blackbird ink's Kingfisher Blue.  It's a lovely shade of blue that is a wee bit lighter than Diamine Oxford Blue, and one of my three favourite inks.

The natural question is why have I only ever finished this one bottle.  Well, I have a habit of giving partly used inks to people to try with a pen I've given them.  I've passed on bottles of Parker Quink, and a number of Diamine blues, blacks and green along with Pelikan Magnums, a Lamy, and other pens.

I ran across this topic and decided to post. Three weeks ago or so, a vintage Skrip bottle became a dead soldier. It was a Sheaffer Skrip Washable Purple with the blue and yellow label. Today a Pelikan 4001 in Brilliant Green bit the dust.

Flag at half mast. ;0)

Sailor Souboku.  I have finished small (e.g. 10-15ml) bottles before, but at 50ml this is my first empty full-size bottle.
