Pelikan Ibis Nib - Marked A ?

Le Vieux

Recommended Posts

I just purchased this pen, in very good shape, with an IBIS nib. Not the first one I have, but it's the first one with this "A" marking on it. Never seen this letter on old Pelikan nibs.

I would like to get more info on this, if possible. I recall seeing an explanation somewhere, but I do not remember where, and of course, I do not remember what the explanation was.

I am certain many of you know, so I am waiting for your help, which is already thanked for.

I believe "A" designates "Anfänger" or a beginner’s nib. As per Joshua's excellent reference here.

Thank you so much, Grainweevil...that is indeed the place I've seen the A designation explained. Pelikan's Perch, of course.

Much appreciated!

Should be a 'true' regular flex nib....my 120's and Geha School pens have that. Both of them are the American Bump Under nibs....instead of the flat subbish semi-flex.

Though later A nib Pelikano pens could be stiffer....I believe some one said.

While the 'A' does denote a beginners nib, I have only seen that on more modern production pens. I have never seen it on an Ibis. I have looked through the 1951 and 1953 catalogs that I have available and find no mention of an 'A' nib there. Here is a page out of Price List 70B from June 1951 that depicts much of the available nib sizes of the time...

And that's why I always put such caveats as "I believe" whenever offering up info! So what might it indicate if it's not "Anfänger", I find myself wondering.
