Sepia - Rohrer & Klingner

Rohrer & Klingner operates since 1892. At the moment it's the fifth generation of the family that manages the company. I guess that after 122 years they know what they are doing.

R&K inks offer amazing quality for amazing price. In my country a bnottle of R&K ink costs 5-6 $. I know it's a bit more expensive in America, yet I believe the price is still reasonable.

I find it interesting that Rohrer & Klingner seems to focus mainly on the content and not on the bottles. Inks come in industrial looking bottle taht is quite handy but there's just nothing fancy about it. It's surprising.

Anyway they offer eighteen colors, some stunning, some boring but all have good qualities and are easy to clean.

It's time to re-review this inks.

Sepia is actually one of my all - time favorites sepias. It's cheap, it flows nicely, it behaves well and I enjoy the hue a lot. What else could I possibly want? This is a color you could easily use on a daily basi - cool choice for business people who want something else then black or blue. There's nothing wrong in stepping a little bit out of the crowd.

The flow is smooth. Drying time is reasonable.

Great review, this looks like a more greyish cousin of Yama Guri. The more I look at it, the more I seem to like it.

It is not often I read a review about an ink that appeals to me, go to my "AmberLea Davis" cabinet of inks & find I have the ink, under review. The more interesting thing is that the seal does not seem to be broken on my bottle, leading me to wonder WHY didn't I try this ink after receipt? (I am afraid the answer it more obvious that I want to admit!)

 

A quick fill of an empty Parker 51 with a broad nib confirms this is an ink I am glad I found! Thank you for your review & for my NEW ink choice of the day.

Thank you for the review, Vis. I must have gotten a bad bottle or something. The bottle I had was very dry. Even in my wettest stubs, I would have dry starts and skipping. I liked the color but hated the way it behaved. I finally tossed it.

My bottle is unused....sitting for a long time. It is a different sepia than the MB Sepia I started on.

It took me a while to see there are different sepia's...and this is more the cuttlefish type than some of the browner ones.

 

I have a feeling it's an ink I will refill into cartridges in they and CC pens are easier to clean. There is a warning not to mix this Sepia ink.

 

I must think to use one of my five grey inks when I ink this to see how gray might look next to it.

 

It does look a bit like a grayed Herbin Cafe des Ill's.

 

That is not in my to do list yet. I have two pens that are dry and one that is nearly there. So I could after cleaning find something for both the gray and this Sepia.

 

Medium 'true' regular flex nib looks good for making that nib shade. Semi-flex I think would be too wet and take away the shading.

I'd have to use the similar for the gray too.

DA Cement might do. That looks like the flight line as the dawn grays after a light rain.

On my list to do soon.....all I got to do is scribble one CC pen that is almost empty dry.

Clean three....fill only two.

A fabulous review of a gorgeous ink. After using about 70 inks this one is one of the very favourites. Just perfect.

I've grown tired of mixing various inks to get this same tone and dealing with density inconsistencies, color changes as the ink is used up and difficulty in measurements...

Ordered a sample of this ink tonight from Vanness.
If it matches or supercedes what i've been making from mixing inks...I'm buying a full bottle.

Tried it on 5 or so good papers... Pen used a '90's Pelikan 200 M regular flex with a tear drop tipping.

It is by me a gray ink.

 

I even brought out my honking big magnifying glass 1 1/2 inch thick by 4"....2.7 x 10cm..... no help.

I even went back and printed in hopes of more shading...da nada.

 

I have to look for shading.....often the comment, not much.

Subtle is not what I'm looking for in a shading ink.

 

Oxford Optic 90g & my new paper Kyome 70g....some.

CT 90g, & M&K 95g.. not much.

Mondi color copy 100g...have to look for it.

I normally expect good shading on 170g Gmund, Blank Beige creme. Not a hell of a lot.

Avery Zweckform 170g a slick paper...I expect any ink that shades to shade well on it. Some shading, more in cursive than in print. A here and there only.

 

I got to buy some of that Japanese river paper.

Wound up throwing away the whole bottle.
The ink was drier than I prefer for my CIS nib, and then the bottle molded during the time I've been using "Cacao Du Bresil". 
No loss..."Yama-Guri" and "Cacao Du Bresil" are much much better options that work smoother in my pen.
