Discovering Fake Parker Pens From Photos?

hello parker forum,

i am by no means a parker user or expert, but i have just won two auctions with parker pens in them, and i have a question in mind.

this is the listing link for you to see the pics since i cannot upload any photos to the forum at this moment

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-parker-fountain-pens-/332110065680?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=2gyU4abi60YdbdRUI2T24Wu9X4Q%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

my question comes from seeing enough parker knock offs on chinese shopping sites which do in fact use actual parker images in their listings. the feedback on those listings often mentions the pen being good, indistinguishable from real, or something like that. i was wondering if i may have bid on fake pens,

is there anyone who has seen the knock offs or knows if they are distinguishable from the genuine product?

do the pens in the listing seem real?

what are their models called so i can google them?

and what do you personally think of them?

Hello KingRoach! Congratulations on your new pens. Both of them (Frontier and Profle) look legit to me. As far as I know there were no Frontier counterfeits. :)

Have no idea how things were going with Profile, sorry. :/

Good luck!

Thanks a lot, I just realised that Parker uses its own proprietary cartridges/fillers. Let's just hope they come with converters or cartridges that I can refill.A

nd thanks for the reassurance. The question is still up though: can you spot a counterfeit in photos or are they doing it so well that one can be tricked into thinking they bought a parker?

On a more hopeful note, I think that the actual item (not the photo) will probably feel very counterfeity. I came under the impression a while ago that a fake parker uses much thinner metal in their bodies. I still wonder if any copies have been made that well.

Oh well, looking forward to using those nibs now.

To the best of my knowledge there are no fakes of those pens - not prestigious enough to warrant fakes. The Frontier looks like a later one, the Profile was called the IM outside Europe.

The Parker pens that I know have been faked are (there may be more I don't know of):

  • Sonnet, Particularly Red & Blue lacquer and 'Tartan' finish in bright chrome rather than real silver.
  • Rialto (for a while the fakes were selling for MORE than the real thing!)
  • Parker 51 (not so common now as the fakes were not as well made as the real thing and don't last so well)

Dependant on the fake's quality, it can be easy or very hard to spot fakes, and people do get suckered by fakes. While Parker is subject to faking, it's not subject to the wholesale onslaught from the faker's that Dunhill & Mont Blanc are, where every last bit of the IP is studied & copied more-or-less faithfully.

Parker Chinese look-alikes, which make no claim that they are Parkers, but are obviously 'inspired by' (to be generous):

  • Sonnet: Hero 5020, Kaigelu 356, Baoer 388
  • Duofold Centennial: Kaigelu 316
  • Duofold International: Jinhao Century
  • Vector/Rialto: Baoer 801
  • Parker 51: Hero 616
  • Parker 61: (90% scale) Wing Sung 812.

Hope this is of interest,

Richard.
