I won't have it in hand until Wednesday to really go over it but I may have found a rather special bird if it checks out;

A Pelikan 100N with gray/black binde, cork piston, and nickel trim. Probably late 30s/early 40s. 14K gold fine nib. Can't wait to have it in hand because if it turns out to be as advertised, it may indeed be a more rare find.

M405 Stresemann EF arrived today. It's very handsome, in a seriously low-key way - "sober" I think best describes it. The hard part now is waiting for the Take-sumi to arrive.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

A Gray binde 101N is on my list as well, the nickel trim makes it something apart. The photos make indicate a pen in nearly pristine condition. Looking forward to hearing your report.

The pen arrived today. The listing was inaccurate and its actually a synthetic seal. That seems to date the pen 1949-51. Just need to clarify the cap and whether its original to that time period. Overall tremendous shape. Some corrosion and pitting on the clip and the piston knob has a slight indent but overall very clean.

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

Ill be doing a full post on this variant looking at both earlier and later versions. Hopefully will be up in a few weeks.

I'm on the fence about M1000. It the nib turns out to be craptacular then I won't use it and would likely not have the patience to deal with it and get it fixed.

Though I had it just over 2 weeks now, I hadn't yet inked it but tonight, tired of waiting for the Take-sumi to arrive, I filled it with KWZ Maroon (which occurred to me would be a good alternative) and I can officially add the M405 Stresemann to my flock. It's quite handsome, even nicer than the photos suggest, and looking forward to trying it at work tonight.

Dave: I admit to being one of those who likes ink and pen to have a connection of some kind, so my first reaction would be to fill this really beautiful pen with something sepia, tan, or golden brown. KWZ El Dorado or Bungubox Ebisu Gold, maybe, but Callifolio Inti or Inca Gold would be magnificent, in my view.

 

I do also like bbs' suggestion of a dusky or misty violet. The obvious choice would be J. Herbin Poussière de Lune, but something more subtle like Robert Oster's Opal Mauve or de Atramentis Heather Violet might be nice.

 

So many options for a gorgeous pen like that!

 

BTW, what size nib?
