Does Anyone Know What Converter Would Fit This Old Gold Nib Schaeffer Pen?

Hi all,

My husband recently found a fountain pen that he had purchased in 1987 in St. Andrews, Scotland. When he opened it up, however, the converter that was inside had cracked.

I have attached photos of the pen and a close-up of the nib.

Would anyone be able to tell me what kind of converter would fit in this pen?

Thanks so much!

Fingers crossed,

Debbie

Sheaffer converter.

Jar: Thanks for your reply (which I assume means that there is only one type of Schaeffer converter and that it fits pens from 30+ years ago). I'll let my husband know.

Thanks again,

Debbie

When this pen was made, it would take a Sheaffer squeeze converter. I'm guessing that is what was in it - a picture of the converter would be a good idea to confirm this.

Sheaffer no longer makes this converter. If you search around you can probably find some new/old stock - Sheaffer made this converter for many years.

Sheaffer later came out with a replacement that looks like an international converter (with a twist piston) but is not a match for the international piston converter and won't interchange. The new Sheaffer converter is widely available - Amazon for one place.

The new model should fit your pen. Sheaffer had some very thin pens that took unique converters, but your pen doesn't look like one.

Most any Sheaffer converter should work in that pen. It looks like the standard Targa.

A metal cased squeeze converter would have been the one that was issued with this pen, but the new twist action converter will definitely fit it. I have the new type in my Sheaffer Targa pens and they are much better than the squeeze type converter IMHO

Here is the Sheaffer twist action converter on Amazon.com.

Very nice looking Targa. I syringe fill my cartridges for these pens and have had no problems with ink getting to the paper. But I may now look up some converters.

A couple of years ago I bought what I believe to be a standard Sheaffer converter which fits a 1974 Imperial. If your pen takes a standard cylindrical Sheaffer cartridge then a standard Sheaffer converter will fit.

Personally, I have come to rather like the squeeze converters. They're kinda ugly, but convenient. Squeeze-and-release. Done.

I also wondered for a moment if that was a Slim Targa, but the proportions just don't look skinny enough to my eyes. Always had to be wary of those on fleaBay.

I think my husband threw out the old/cracked converter, but I'll ask him.

Thanks for the info, Tony!

And I agree with you about the squeeze converters. When I ordered one for a Kaweco Sport, I was doubtful about whether it would work, but it's very easy to use.

Warning

When you get the Sheaffer screw piston converter, look very carefully at the front of the converter.

I have had 3 where the seal on the front of the converter had a crack, and ink would leak out. Unfortunately I had bought the converters then put them into my stock, and did not use them till way pass the return cutoff time.

BTW Sheaffer made at least 3 different converters. Some of the ones which are no longer made, such as the squeeze converter will fit pens which the current screw piston converter will not fit.
