Is that a medium nib? And what ink are you using? I like the rose gold—very subtle.

Hi Frank!  Yes, Medium.  The ink is one that I blended.

As far as the rose gold goes, I think it’s tight…very classy.

Thanks!

Matt

I filled most of my Montblanc pens over the last few days and I've been writing with each one. I'm trying to get better at identifying nib size by looking at them.

I like your red-orange ink mixture. MB has quite a few red-orange inks among its special editions. I like them, too.

My first MB—and first expensive fountain pen—was a 149 with a medium nib. The store where I bought it, Fahrney's in Washington DC, recommended the medium as a good size for most people's handwriting. After trying many other nibs, I have to agree; it is useful for almost everything I write.

I hope that you continue to enjoy your 149; they are great pens.

I picked mine up in a bundle in 2020.  I have a lawyer friend who decided he didn’t like fountain pens.  He knew I was an avid fountain pen fellow, and he asked me to make him an offer.  I apologized and told him that I was not interested, and I recommended selling them on eBay.  He told me he didn’t want to bother, and I begged him to sell them to get most of his money back.  He again told me he was too busy to deal with eBay/going to the post office, and asked me to make him an offer.

I told him I was not interested, but that I would offer him $500.  He agreed, and I ended up with this MB 149, a Pelikan M1000 that is super BOLD, and the Pelikan M815 with Palladium Strips!  He also threw in some high end inks, and paper.  I just had the nib on the M815 ground from a Medium to a Fine by Anabelle Hiller at the DC pen show, and it writes like a dream now!

OH WOW!!!

And please don't grind down that M1000 nib.  If you don't like it, I'll trade you a beautiful medium.

Make sure that you get some cash, too, if decide to trade with Amberlea. "Beautiful mediums" are available almost anywhere.

Absolutely. But you would be insane to give up that broad nib.  😁

Ha!  It does put down quite a BOLD line…are the Pelikan M1000 Bold Nibs rare?  I love how this nib feels on the paper, and the luscious line that it puts down.

Great picture! I don't know that the Bs are rare, but the BB, OB  and iB let alone the  OBB are tough to get without some serious outlay of cash. The B can be ordered on any new pen.

I think what I am going to do with my medium is what I did with my MB149 mediums, have them custom ground to be a stub or cursive italic.

Nice to read, makes me want to dig out my double ball OBB 1005 or the small tear dropped tipped  600 OBB, my remaining OBB Osmia....or my eyeballed BB 146. (Might well be another one or two hidden away from my memory. Been hanging out with my M's lately.)

But I've been editing with either my '59 Geha 790 semi-flex EF or my regular flex 200's EF. Wide nibs are too wide for that.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

I have a M1000 medium nib that puts out ink like a fire hose. If I have it ground down to a fine will it still be a gusher?

So the fire hose will remain only slightly narrower. M1000 has a soft nib, which under pressure sometimes moves away from the feed(gap) due to which this overflow is made. It is necessary to turn to a nibmaister so that he can look at and fixit problem as it is, and also check gap between tines.

What inks are you using in your 1000?.....it is a regular flex nib, the only one Pelikan makes out side the 200, and if you are heavy handed from nail use, it will write a tad wider....as a poster pointed out..............I guess he is right, in regular flex is @= to Japanese soft. ..... Having no Japanese pens, I think of it as regular flex.

Pelikan 4001 is a very dry ink, so the nibs were made to make that a bit wetter.

Waterman made for it's time a wet ink, so made a narrow nib to balance that out. (some Noodler users think of Waterman inks as dry:yikes:......so depending which Noodler ink you use you could make any pen a firehose. ...Even one width narrower than European Japanese nibs.

Edelstein varies in wettness, some dry, some medium and some are wet....I don't keep track enough to say which is which.

I find MB to be towards the middle.   Herbin or R&K I think as medium dry. Aurora Blue is a medium dry........having still half a 15 year old bottle of bottle of for me a good black Pelikan 4001, don't need the slightly better Aurora. (Noodler makes even blacker blacks)

DA can vary from wet to dry.

So I don't think grinding your 1000 from B to M will make it less a fire hose..............but if you should try some 4001 ink first..........the brown is slightly red, but shades, (all 4001 inks but the new dark green ink:( shade)............violet is good, as is the Turquoise that IMO = Lamy's.

IMO the new dark green .....is dull and don't shade....(I don't know any school kids to dump it on...in in Germany fountain pens are still used in school or was a couple years ago.)  Ah Ha...could take it to the flea market....will.

.........I got hooked on green with the old 4001 brilliant green, a vivid green-green. Got 14 of my 19 greenish inks that year, For a great green-green  buy R&K Verdura which is a tad better as is. @E-8....a hair better than the  overly expensive MB Irish Green.

(Watched MB go from E-15 to E19 to E-23 in two years and that is not inflation, but ripping off the well to do. So I have a supply of that ink, and won't ever buy any more.

I do suggest finding out which Diamine ink matches any MB inks. Diamine which I don't chase, has at least three ink shades near any MB ink, in they make hundreds of inks, and are affordable.)

What paper are you using....cheap paper = wide lines, especially with a wet ink.

MB has a modern rep of making a wide nib for marking. I bought on on sale for 1/3 off. In the B&M  the M wrote to the  B I was expecting....at home on better paper it wrote to a M.:crybaby:So I had to new pen factory swap nibs but that's another story...........do take your own paper with you when buying a pen at a B&M.

Try some Rhoda 80/90g or CT.

Clairefontaine Triumphe 90g. Those are slick papers so the line will be thinner. They are not absorbent, so the think part of a letter stays on top of the paper that second or so longer, promoting if the ink shades, shading.

What is gone is gone, and you'd have to go F at least to get a dryer line., Could even have to go EF.......

But I think your ink and paper are at fault for the fire hose.
