146 Le Grand 75 year, B nib, Mystery Black.

Those 75 year editions were quite pretty. Very nice.

Is the better than Pilot #15 FA nib?

Not for me… The pilot is smoother writing, more flexy and most importantly, still manages to keep a faster recovery from the flex.

My Woolf is inked, but away in it's brown backlit armband jewelry box. It's B nib = BB in reality. The fat edge of tolerance instead of middle.

My pre'24 weak kneed wet noodle # 6 nib MB Safety Pen is out and inked.

Today (and most other days) I am using an array of smaller vintage Montblancs and Monte Rosa pens, the last entry being the MB 242.

Above you see

Montblanc Meisterstück 142 [14C/585 DIY Italic Medium]

Montblanc Masterpiece 142 [14C/585 DIY Italic Medium]

Montblanc 242 [14C/585 DIY Italic Medium] new! 😉

Montblanc 342 [14C/585 OB(OBB? -- not sure, it is just very broad and juicy)]

Monte Rosa 042 [Steel, DIY Italic Medium]

Montblanc 232 [14 Karat DIY Italic Medium to Broad]

Note how the furniture changes between the first tier 142, the second tier 232/242, the third tier 342, and the Monte Rosa/cheapest Montblanc (probably the school segment brand) 042.

The flat-top 232 all in all is quite different compared to the x4x-series, but the two-ringed cap furniture is the same as with the 242.

Between the MB 342 and MR 042 most parts are interchangeable, I sucessfully swapped nibs, feeds and caps several times successfully when repairing pens. Although you may have to try with concrete pens, as the tolerances between actual pens might bo too different. Again, I can only say that for me swapping has always worked so far.

Here are the nibs (sorry for the bad quality, the photography fairy did not mean well today):

All pens, including the Monte Rosa, have Montblanc #2 nibs.

This shape and size seem to be my goldilocks zone, especially the very curvy grip of the 242 and the 232 are very comfortable for me.

I only have two MB's inked a pre-24 MB Safety pen with a #6 Weak Kneed Wet Noodle.YkRbOpt.jpglnHrQjX.jpg

Francis Goossens did a grand job on it. He did say the polishing was the hardest thing. The snowflake is new.

P8vt3DH.jpg4i318Pa.jpg

And a Virginia Woolf, which I really like the my eyes only bling of the nib.

Photo's with permission of Pentime.

He makes professional pictures, I have a Brownie I ill use.

I do have other MB's. But these are inked.

This thread led me to ink, one of my very best MB's a medium-large '50-60 146.

The medium-large 146 IMO has great balance, better balance than my two later Large 146's.

The nib I eyeball in there is no marking as OB in a maxi-semi-flex nib. It is a very wet writing nib being a maxi.

I unfortunately didn't take any before pictures, before I sent it to Francis. It was a mess, missing the cap ring, a problem in screwing it into the cap. It had been a beater pen in a live auction lot.

I had of course checked the nib  and as I had wished it was a maxi.

I have a 234 1/2 Deluxe with a semi-flex KOB, and a rolled gold 742, with a nib between semi&maxi (my only one in both semi&maxie seem to clump together). The maxi was something I had been missing in my MB '50-60's pens. All three have telescopic pistons.

I had expected in the end to just save the nib for one of my two Large 146's.

But Francis made me very lucky.

IMO a better pen than the later large 146's, with better balance and a better nib.

I just inked it with MB Irish Green.

My 242 Deluxe ('52-54 only) has a different cap band and clip than yours. A Masterstuck clip.

It is the only MB I have with marking on the pen, for the nib.

2431/2 KOB.........and as noobie when I won that as part of a live auction. I grumbled in it drove up the price of the 400nn that was in the lot.

I only found out what it was only after I bought Lambrou's book. and I didn't know it was a refined version of the older 139's or so.

In fact then I'd no idea there ever had been a 139, only 'knowing' the Noblise and the 146/9.

It did unexpectedly win the balance test:yikes: I did when I only had some 20 pens. The 400nn, ended up 4th. The Geha 725 was second, the P-75 third.

Enjoying the MB 14, completely reliable and lays down a nice juicy line of ink - I love the fact that it is probably about 60 years old.
