I‘ve had the Montblanc Heritage Rouge et Noir fountain pen with snake clip for a while with an F nib, and love the Heritage soft nibs so much, way more than all the Meisterstück pens/nibs. That I succumbed to my desire to own another with a medium nib.

Say hi to my Montblanc Heritage Rouge et Noir Metamorphosis with medium nib. Here shown next to his older brother.

I‘ve noticed that the pens are identical, and so is the cap beside the clip itself. Except that the blind engraving „Montblanc“ on the side of the cap is deeper on the Snake clip vs the Spider clip pen.

I‘ve got the Snake pen inked with Midnight Blue and the Spider pen with Ultra Marine.

146 (F) - Platinum Blue-Black

Also testing out two new arrivals:

145 (BB) - Purdey Single Malt -- this one is like a wide wet stub. I am not convinced I am going to love it, but maybe I just need to get used to it. It does lay so much ink as to kill the lovely shading of this color. So will have to use the ink in something else, I think. Something more dry, perhaps. How about 4001 Royal Blue?

320 (M) - Iroshizuku Take-sumi -- kinda sorta springy like my No 12, but with a more feedbacky feel. I like it a lot so far, and I already liked Take-sumi in MBs. Good to see this one continuing the trend. What a quality pen for their "student" line!

Sometimes when I don't feel like "journaling" but do feel like writing, I will fill a Rhodia page with dictation from the youtube video I am watching. In this case, I was listening to "What I Ink" review the pens he used across several months.
  • Montblanc No 12 (M/F) - Aurora Blue
  • Montblanc 145 (BB) - Iroshizuku Momiji

Hi, I hope this is the right place to ask my question… I have a collection of vintage fountain pens with almost every nib type and width. I have only two modern pens, both Visconti (HS original with a wet ‘medium' and a fine VG Maxi Demonstrator). I can now (happily) afford a Montblanc 149 and have a couple of questions that I hope experienced 149 users can help me with 🙂 I could spend time looking ‘everywhere' for a nice vintage example with 14K nib, or a customised nib, or instead just walk into a local specialist pen shop and buy a new 149 with 18K fine-tip nib off the shelf. I’m pretty much italic’d, broad, stubbed and oblique equipped, so would most like a truly smooth, un-wet, excellent practical fine nib. MB doesn’t appear to offer any 149 nib option narrower than a 'standard fine’ (no EF etc.). What advice do you offer in terms of best nib choice for the 149? Is it likely I’ll be able to walk into a new pen dealer’s shop, buy a ‘fine’ nibbed example, come home and be perfectly happy with nib performance, any custom tuning being totally unnecessary? Thank you indeed for your valuable advice!

You can as shown order the 149 in EF, which is like a Japanese F.

However you have another wonderful option, which is the 149 flex nib. It is a very fine EF under normal writing, but adds the extra dimention of flexing of up to a BB under moderate pressure.  It is not for everyone, but is a joy to use. Arguably MB best non-custom nib right now.

There is plenty of information on this elsewhere on this forum.

Have been working on my pens today.  I was using my Rudyard Kipling for taking notes.  I love the fine nib on this pen and how comfortable it is to write with.

So this week will be my 149, with Toffee Brown (or GvFC Hazelnut Brown. Time will tell).

Same as all the time, since 46 years ago. My one and only, trusty 149 w. 18C F nib. There are periods I clean and shelf it for a while, but it it’s been in use ever since.

🙂
