Don't Just Tell Us About The Pen You're Using *show* Us!, 2017

This is my favourite ink at the moment. I had left it unopened for a few years thinking it must be just another black ink, along with some other backup bottles, but wow it smells lovely. Smells just like the Sumi ink that you use for dip pen calligraphy or brush calligraphy. It's got this earthy, calming, traditional scent. I am loving it. And yes, I just checked, my nose has black smudge on the tip. :lticaptd:

Refilled my Sailor 1911 Large Demonstrator yesterday. As it's the latest addition to my collection, I'm still looking for the perfect ink for this pen. First tried Sailor Tokiwa Matsu, but as it puts down quite a fine line, it didn't meet my expectations. So, this round I went for Iroshizuku Asa Gao, but so far I'm not too impressed, I guess that happens with such a fine line when you're used to seeing the same ink coming from a (not so) Fine Pelikan nib.

I'm thinking this pen needs a darker ink, so next fill will probably be Sailor Blue-black/Miruai/Souten or Diamine Sargasso Sea, as those are some of the darker non-black inks I own (other ink suggestions welcome :) ).

... Never underestimate the power of human stupidity ...

Doing some conflict of laws research today and taking some notes. A topic of interest to, frankly, few lawyers but still of extreme importance when it comes up.

Also a bit grumpy because I accidentally included my Sailor Young Profit rather than my brand new Namiki Falcon (which has maybe the softest and smoothest modern nib I've ever used in my life) in my 3 pen carrier today. Such is life when you have maybe 6 black and gold pens :(

Of course, the Sailor is still a great nib. Very small for a B, but that's Japan for you.

Dad's old Montblanc 146 and the aforementioned Young Profit - Iroshizuku Yama-budo in the former and Yu-yake in the latter.

Aw, sucks about the clip. I've had some issues with my K316 violently flinging its cap jewel at me at the slightest provocation, but that was at least easy to fix.

Heck, I need a trip to Spain at this point. Germany is not exactly the most aesthetically pleasing place to be stuck in. Alas, closest thing I'll get is Milano, where I'll get to work with some medieval manuscripts in summer, because I get to go on a university excursion tied to a subject I don't even study... but I digress. In any case, my Delta could use a trip to some nibmeister, for sure, but that would likely lead to having things shipped internationally, and that is such a hassle... and besides, there's a very handsome but leaky old maroon Artus-Ballit, which is quite a bit higher up on the "spend-more-money-to-make-it-work-well"-list, once I get around to it.

I'm pretty sure pretty most of those early aviation pioneers deserve to be crushed on - doing what they did takes a serious ability to kick butt... and probably a slightly lacking sense of self-preservation

---

@the_gasman: Huh, is that a snap-on cap? Never seen one of those on a pen like that - all of my old piston fillers have screw-on or friction fit caps. Nice pen and ink combo, though; looks very classy!

---

My pens for the day - slightly inspired by eliweisz and also my deep love for Diamine Oxblood

(That Pen. I'm actually a little bit mad, because the finish looks pretty nice on here... but it's actually very flat, with no depth to it, and one half of the pen is basically just blue)

(An old-ish Sheaffer. 14k nib, sold as an Imperial, but... who knows? because I don't. Also, excuse the lighting, my room is dark as heck and my camera doesn't appreciate it.)

Both pens are inked with Diamine Oxblood, like almost a third of my pen collection... I need more nice red inks.

Beautiful pens!

The Sheaffer is definitely an Imperial. A late 60s-early 70s Imperial "dolphin", as far as I can tell. Can't see from the pic if its a c/c or touchdown, but it's a gorgeous pen in any case!

Indeed, indeed. Looks great!

Thanks!

That's a c/c, alas. Touchdown would have been more interesting, but probably more expensive, too, and I mostly just wanted a pen with an inlaid nib.

Photobucket decided to randomly break, apparently. Fun!

Anyway, I wrote a lot of vocabs on index cards today and then ended up creating color swatches for my entire ink collection, which was considerably more fun.

I don't have every ink in a pen right now, though, so I had to label some of the swatches with a dip pen.

It's a Zebra G nib with a random ink reservoir on top.

And this is what I wrote my index cards with.

That beautiful pen looks similar in style to one that I have, that was made by John Twiss, of Nottingham, UK.

I suppose that it is just coincidence.

Cheers,

David.

Did he not state that it WAS a Twiss pen?

I'll crawl back into my hole!

Sorry guys: I'll pay more attention in future.

Do you remember THAT moment in school when it became unavoidably obvious that you hadn't listened to the question?!!?

The apologies are all mine, as I have been caught not reading your post to the end!

I had never thought to sniff my pen until you asked the question. No, it doesn't smell of candy ... but it does taste of it. Aaaarrrgggghhhh! I couldn't resist – I've eaten it!

[That IS my humour, which the world is better without, so I'll put it back in its box].

I live 30 minutes drive from The Turner's Workshop so I occasionally arm myself with chocolate biscuits and go to have a natter with Vince, the owner, because he is a good man to chat with. Vince is not a pen lover but has accumulated a massive stock of pen blanks in all sorts of materials like acrylic, cellulose, hard rubber, etc., , some of which are from the former stocks of bankrupt pen makers, like pre-1995 Conway Stewart. It's a tatty industrial unit but  is like an Aladdin's cave to anyone that likes either old or custom pens. He also stocks pen turning equipment (hence the name) and stuff like micromesh pads.

The dangerous thing about visiting Vince is that John Twiss makes occasional visits to collect material. Then it gets expensive! The Cherry pen in the photo is one of two I ordered when I visited Vince on a Twiss day. That coffee and chocolate biscuits cost me £400!!

Cheers,

David.

I have not spoken to Vince, but having dealt with The Turner's Workshop, have had excellent service and some delightful emails. A fantastic business! I must admit that the Conway Stewart pen blanks are much, much cheaper than the chocolate biscuits :-)

Too many pens, too little time!
