New pen came with stub + baby's bottom = hard start. After nib grind...you get this! Makes you wonder why you paid for an expensive car, and it needs to be tuned up before first drive!

Aw, that sucks. Baby's bottom is the worst thing. Nice pen, though - and fantastic handwriting.

Finally got my Jinhao x450 nibs and gave one of my favorite pens a bit of a makeover. We had some disagreements about ink flow, but clearly came to a satisfactory conclusion. The second pen was my note-taking pen; nameless piston filler (likely 1950's), 14k Bock nib, Diamine Saddle Brown. The result is pretty fun.

Wow! I haven't touched my Jinhao's for about a year, but the x450 was my first FP, and maybe stubbing it would be a good excuse to use it again :-)

It probably would be! I've stubbed three of my six Jinhao x450s now (not a big fan of M nibs, but I love those pens), and they're probably the best candidates for that kind of thing. The nibs are pretty soft and no match for my wire cutter, and they polish pretty easily, too.

Plus, even if you do mess up, replacement nibs are about 50 cents a piece on ebay. I actually used one of those for this pen, because the original was one of the best Jinhao nibs I've ever seen, and changing that one would have been a shame.

Ok. Here's something ...

Can a Venvstat Magna be on your list?

- ink capacity is 3.0ml (not a typo.)

- extended nib for med to large hands.

- writes like a reeds pen.

- semi transparent .. Vacumatic-ish?

- no clip and not postable (can be made with clip and be postable)

- stylish nib section

- carbon fiber feed and section - superior wetness ... So large ink reservoir is required.

How does it handle? Judge yourself. 12mm barrel. Feels like carbon fiber (matted) good grip!

This beauty arrived today! I've always wanted a pen with a translucent red barrel like this one, but the only other one I could think of was a Delta DolceVita Federico, and not only did the red ones always go for a (comparative) truckload of money, but I'm also not all too fond of the section and nib on those things*.

The nib's a bit wide for my taste, but it fits the pen well and the amount of wetness is pretty spot on - not too mention that the nib design is beautiful.

The ink is Diamine Oxblood, but it's a few shades darker IRL.

*on the other hand, they have a screw cap, don't weigh as much and are available in nib grades other than M, so there's that.

Congrats! It's great pen. Bought it as a companion to my Dolcevita. Stellar performance with any red ink I tried.

I'm really new to pens and writing. Started down the rabbit hole 3 months ago because I realized while trying to teach my kids writing my print was aweful and I had forgotten a lot of basic cursive. I just finished my first ergonomic dip pen. A couple of cuts and two blisters later it was totally worth it! Planning on carving one out of resin soon for my daughters.

Let me know what you think. attachicon.gifIMG_3732.JPG

Hats off!

Thanks @Graudy. It writes beautifully now. Just 5min of work isnt much.

An interesting unorthodox design. Not my cup of tea, but in your hand, every pen is a great performer!

For those who are interested in numbers and such, the grid is 5 x 5 Rhodia. Ink is Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo.

Now that's what I call fine!

Oh, I know. I absolutely blame you for that particular pen purchase. And Helen. And Ian.

Jokes aside, that beautiful photo of your 915 was what put the pen on my radar in the first place and I'm honestly quite grateful for that.

Fun fact, I actually prefer my 915 over my Delta Dolcevita Federico in all but weight - even design. Yours looks great, though, especially with that ink - and lucky you, for ending up with such an exceptional nib! Mine has a fusion nib, and while it writes great, it tends to skip quite a bit.

My pen of the day - early 1950's Geha student's fountain pen. Surprisingly soft semi-flex nib, and it handles Pelikan blue-black beautifully. It handles almost any ink beautifully, but Pelikan blbk and this pen are a particularly fantastic combination. Plus, I can pick it up after two weeks and it still writes instantly.

I have been interested in Venvstas for a while - interesting designs. You are clearly pleased with yours - out of the 2 pens you have do you have a preference for either one? Tough I appreciate :)

@EliWeiss Thank you. I wish I am as verse in Kurrent as you are and able to switch with ease between scripts. A talent you are.

@ Da Vinci. I bought the pen for the nib/feed design. Interesting Pen. The carbon fiber feed is a joy to use, ink is always ready at the tip of my Magna. It's a long pen, I pocket it (taken to work) for 5 days, dropped everytime I bent over. It's long and my pocket is shallow, without a clip to secure. My advice would be ask for a modification, shorter as my Parker Centennial and a proper clip for security. Well, then it wouldn't be a Venvstat but a custom.

Nib is a nib, how you grind or have it ground. They all handle like a pen. I like my pens to have bling bling so a gold nib is preferred.

My two ten fingers on a typewriter computer keyboard have never connected with my brain heart.

My hand on a pen does. A fountain pen, of course.

Glad you're happy with your 915. Mine has a minor issue - the clip is a bit loose, and I haven't the slightest idea how to fix it. Otherwise, the pen is wonderful. Inked it with Montblanc Corn Poppy Red last night, writes like a charm. Speaking of your Delta nib - maybe it needs a trip to Spain, too?

Thank you. I still envy your Italic skills. Long hours with Lloyd Reynolds guidebook and Seyes paper are fun - alas, my daily Cursive Italic remains as chaotic as ever.

Regarding the Venvstas - definitely not my cup of tea, but exciting anyway.

Thanks a lot! Just two years ago, nobody could imagine me writing with a stub or broad nib - I've always been a fine-extra fine type.

And now to something completely different - namely, a humble inexpensive mass-production ink and a low-end old pen:

It was disappointing when I first got it. I about to consign it to a deep dark drawer (limbo for pens) until I remembered to have a peer down my loupe. Ta dah !!! A quick tweak of the tines and it is writing as wet and smooth as any of my good writers. It now satisfies all my pre-requisites for a work pen:

  • wet, smooth writer
  • gold nib
  • medium point (for writing/drawing symbols on anaesthetic charts – still on one bit technology in the UK!)
  • not so expensive that I cry if it does a nib-dive
  • easy to disassemble so that I can perform frequent, thorough washes (I use registrar's ink)
  • be unlike any pen that anyone else may use at work

Cheers,

David.

PS: Sorry about the unfortunate glare – the clip just has ONOTO on it; the nib has ONOTO, 14ct, 3.

Aw, sucks about the clip. I've had some issues with my K316 violently flinging its cap jewel at me at the slightest provocation, but that was at least easy to fix.

Heck, I need a trip to Spain at this point. Germany is not exactly the most aesthetically pleasing place to be stuck in. Alas, closest thing I'll get is Milano, where I'll get to work with some medieval manuscripts in summer, because I get to go on a university excursion tied to a subject I don't even study... but I digress. In any case, my Delta could use a trip to some nibmeister, for sure, but that would likely lead to having things shipped internationally, and that is such a hassle... and besides, there's a very handsome but leaky old maroon Artus-Ballit, which is quite a bit higher up on the "spend-more-money-to-make-it-work-well"-list, once I get around to it.

--

I'm pretty sure pretty most of those early aviation pioneers deserve to be crushed on - doing what they did takes a serious ability to kick butt... and probably a slightly lacking sense of self-preservation

---

@the_gasman: Huh, is that a snap-on cap? Never seen one of those on a pen like that - all of my old piston fillers have screw-on or friction fit caps. Nice pen and ink combo, though; looks very classy!

---

My pens for the day - slightly inspired by eliweisz and also my deep love for Diamine Oxblood

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n522/Guardevoir/Pen%20and%20Writing%20Stuff/DSC_0147.jpg

(That Pen. I'm actually a little bit mad, because the finish looks pretty nice on here... but it's actually very flat, with no depth to it, and one half of the pen is basically just blue)

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n522/Guardevoir/Pen%20and%20Writing%20Stuff/DSC_0162.jpg

(An old-ish Sheaffer. 14k nib, sold as an Imperial, but... who knows? because I don't. Also, excuse the lighting, my room is dark as heck and my camera doesn't appreciate it.)

Both pens are inked with Diamine Oxblood, like almost a third of my pen collection... I need more nice red inks.

This is my favourite ink at the moment. I had left it unopened for a few years thinking it must be just another black ink, along with some other backup bottles, but wow it smells lovely. Smells just like the Sumi ink that you use for dip pen calligraphy or brush calligraphy. It's got this earthy, calming, traditional scent. I am loving it. And yes, I just checked, my nose has black smudge on the tip. :lticaptd:
