What's Your Most Recent Mb Purchase? 2017

Bought what was advertised as a MB132 but upon further investigation turned out to be a MB122. The nib is supposed to be an OB but it seems to me more of an OF nib.

Congrats. Love these vintage MBs. :puddle: :puddle:

I found me another bottle of late 1990s/early 2000s ink. This one was too good a deal to pass up as it is the old permanent blue that I like better then the current iteration.

How do you confirm the condition of ink before purchase? If the seal has been broken for 20 years does it go off?

The short answer is I don't. Most of this older ink had more chemicals to stop growth of unsavory bits so that helps out a lot. (MB called theirs SuperCleaner with various formulation numbers, the last I know of was 21.) But sometimes I have ended up with a bad bottle or two. The one that hurt the most was a bottle of Racing Green that was the main reason I bought the lot of inks and it had all sorts of flecks and bits in the ink.

But, if I was more cautious, I would ask the seller to hold the bottle up to the light and where there is space from air you can see the coating of ink on glass. If there are bad problems you would see specks adhere to the glass for a bit. You could also ask the seller to open the cap and see if anything is floating or there is a film on the surface. If none of those, odds are good it is just fine.

I mostly use vintage MB inks right now without issue. I have some non-MB ink that is maybe 70 years old and it is just fine, although it smells of chemicals to me.

Would you use these in your favourite pens though? Is there any chance these chemicals may harm the pen? I'm not saying there should be, just making conversation!

Yes, I do all the time. In the silver barley 146 I just bought I used some 1980s Bleu and turquoise mixed to a custom color.

Lovely pen, I like the white logo writing on the cap. The current donation pens have pointy caps, though not as pronounced.

A danish coral red MB "4", with a smooth EF nib, it´s around 12,5 cm capped, and it was made between 1937-1946.

I proudly share with you my new 2017 acquisition, a Writers Edition Franz Kafka ballpoint pen. It was a long time I was searching for this pen, and yesterday I finally got mine.

Take care,

Two pens purchased today, hours apart...

Brahms donation pen - made a little bit sweeter by a 10% rewards day at Harrods (does not apply to LE pens, but does apply to normal stock and special editions over a year old). It is being sent to Hamburg to have a B nib fitted. Note that 10% is also available online until tomorrow - this is good, but still quite far off duty free prices. Useful if you are looking for a standard pen such as a 146, 149 etc.

Warhol special edition pen - I'd been thinking about this for a while. I figured that with a 146 and Brahms, it was worth having something a little bit different and fun. M nib as standard and should arrive this week.

The best part of the Warhol purchase was the price - brand new from an authorised dealer for £450. Penshop.co.uk currently have 30% off and I was pleasantly surprised that you can use a 10% first order discount code on top of that. They have some other decent special/limited edition pens at the same level of discount, including the Rouge et Noir FP in coral, Tolstoy ballpoint, some Mozart pencils, several Starwalkers and a Boheme FP.

Oh and a bottle of corn poppy red ink.

I recently graduated law school, my graduation gift took a couple months to finally pick out. But today I made the choice and went with this:

For now it has a fine nib, though part of me is leaning towards getting it switched to an OM.
