Hi, da vinci.

You need to slow down and work on the basics of letter shapes. Do you have an instructional book you can use? If not, there are many available.

Happy writing!

David

Well, shoot! Pat Rothfuss is my favorite author and, since this last week had Valentine's Day, let's do something a little sappy, but beautiful nonetheless:

" Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

― Patrick Rothfuss, The Wise Man's Fear

I got the last line just off center - threw the whole thing off.

Excellent (to my untrained eye). Not to hijack the thread but I am curious about your paper: What paper is that and did you create the guidelines yourself?

Thanks,

Dr. C

Thank you Dr. C.

I used cheap copy paper from the local Dollar store that is excellent for practice and layout. It is made in Indonesia and takes ink very well.

I drew the guidelines with pencil and paper ruler. I usually don't use the slant guide for Italic but I have not put in any Italic practice in ages so felt they would help a bit.

Since these were just meant to be layout exercises, I was not very careful with the script. That can sometimes help with the flow as one is writing with a more relaxed state of mind :-)

I'm a bit behind. Life intruded, and not in a good way -- didn't get the scanning done till this afternoon. It's been about 30 years since I've used italic (this is cribbed from Harris The Art of Calligraphy, which is available online as a downloadable .pdf). I have a whole bunch of failed attempts (mostly because when I wrote it the other night I was tired and sort of frazzled and kept making transcription errors. And of course it wasn't done with an italic nib, either.... Much prefer stuff like Uncial, normally -- but this quote defied my attempts and basically had a snit until I did at least an *attempt* in Italic....

Note that the ink is actually more pink/red violet than it appears here -- I couldn't get the image tweaked enough (but the paper is cream, not white, which, if you can adjust your monitor for that, will also get the color right in the writing).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Ok - should I pick a shorter quote?

Pen: Scriptorium Aeterna in SEM Vesuvius ebonite fitted with a JoWo B nib, ground to CI by Pablo at fpnibs dot com.

Ink: Franklin-Christoph Urushi Red

Paper: Tomoe River Ivory (Processing always seems to turn it white.)

Script: My version of a Humanist Bookhand. FYI, written without any guidelines.

P.S. Hey, O.M.! I like Rothfuss a lot also. Is another book in the "Name of the Wind" series ever going to be seen? The last one was a kind of detour.

David: Do you mean Slow Regard of Silent Things? It was a bit of an off-shoot. The Doors of Stone (Book 3) has been a work in progress for some time. He writes a lot like George R.R. Martin - very, very slowly. There was a deal signed to do a movie, TV show and video game based off his world, so I imagine it is taking up a lot of his time. So, we wait...

Yes. That was my reference. Thanks for the title of Book 3. I'm glad he has gotten that far.

I don't know how you envisioned it, but what you produced looks really good to me.
