Hi, Dawn,

Must say that is one of the nicest arrangements that I have seen in some while. Keep up the good work.

Enjoy,

Randal

Tried something a little different for this one: this is based on an Early Gothic hand, which appeared to have some Lombardic Capitals as a header. The ms. is a page from a 12th c. piece from the monastery of Cîteaux, the Moralia in Job. I found a book online called The Art of Calligraphy by David Harris [url: https://grph151.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/the-art-of-calligraphy-by-david-harris.pdf]; I had to cobble together a couple of letters (k and w), based on other letters, since I couldn't find either in the exemplar.

Ruth, you have discovered an old friend of mine. Harris' work came out in the early 1980's, at least that is when I first saw the book. Always wanted a copy but just never quite got around to it. A very complete study of broad-edged scripts, quite suitable for beginners, intermediates, and advanced writing. Love it.

Does anyone else find that handwriting practice has become daily in preparation for this thread?

I just realized that my husband has this book on his shelf.

I am indeed getting a lot more practice now - and in different hands too. For example, I wrote this week's quote in Gothic Batarde as well as Copperplate and then decided to do a fair copy in Copperplate.

Richila, your observation is spot on. My plan is to make 2017 a year of copperplate practice for me, and this thread is a useful weekly touchpoint. At the end of the year, I hope to see 52 examples and some improvement.

I actually found it as a .pdf on the internet Wednesday night. I have a few calligraphy books but I'm not sure where in the house they are; I wasn't familiar with this one. (Somewhere I probably still have a Speedball book; my others are Mark Drogin's Medieval Calligraphy, Edward Johnston's Writing, Illuminating and Lettering, and (IIRC) Jacquelin Svaren's Written Letters.

That's a small library but a complete one. Has a great book on gothic, roman, etc. in Drogin's book, excellent theory and tips in WIL (yes, I know that many of his points are self-inflating and subject to argument), and a templar in Svaren's work that covers modern-day calligraphy. I'm going to have to get a copy of Svaren's Written Letters, don't know what happened to my old copy.

Enjoy,

I am definitely using it as additional motivation to do a little lettering every day. I am far too lazy to do real practice sessions, although I am trying to change that. I like dabbling and playing around with letterforms and colors. Discipline, not so much.
