Did a little doodling to decorate my entry this time, hope to get more work and practice out in the future. Hope you all enjoy this quote and the exercises with it. Dawn, your entry really catches the spirit of spring.

From a person's actions, we may infer attitudes, beliefs, --- and values. We do not know these characteristics outright. The human dichotomies of trust and distrust, honor and duplicity, love and hate --- all depend on internal states we cannot directly experience. Isn't this what adds zest to our life?

I'm still working on foundational.

This is very nice script. I also like the pen/ink/paper combination that produces low enough saturation to show the ductus you used.

What is the model of Foundational Hand you are using?

David, I'm using Sheila Waters' model from Foundations of Calligraphy book.

I need to work on letters with diagonals (v, w, y) and on 's'.

Paper is Rhodia 90 g/m², plain, cream notepad.

Ink comes from a jar of short intl cartridges I bought in local supermarket. Label fell off the jar, so I cannot be sure, but I think it was washable blue by Herlitz. 8+ years in translucent jar on a book shelf could have jumpstarted ink fading process.

As you can see, I've used Manuscript Italic Calligraphy Pen. Specifically 4B 2.8 mm nib. Actually it's closer to 2.55mm. It required some work to correct tines alignment and widen nib slit to improve ink flow. This pen's ink flow is easier to control then Pilot Parallel's.

I'm glad to hear you are enjoying the quotes. Because now it is your turn to put up a quote for us.

Enjoy,

This one is appropriate for the spirit of this thread:

Lettering is order. It is a means to a higher consciousness.

- Friedrich Neugebauer

Edited because I misspelled the name.

Oh, thank you, Dawn! Neugebauer is one of my favourite calligraphers. And I love that quote of his. Now, how much practice can I get in this week ...

Enjoy,

I like the quotation. I have certainly experienced a different state of consciousness while lettering, and I have been told that experience is common. Whether this state is "higher," I cannot say.

The majuscule F is not so good. <sigh> I would rate the rest not so bad.

I've just edited my earlier post because I realized that I misspelled his first name, which is embarrassing considering how recently I have leafed through The Mystic Art of Lettering. In my defense, the piece of paper that I was looking at when I posted earlier had it spelled incorrectly, too.

Nice job, David!

Ah, well. I figured you just anglicized his name. Thanks for the compliment!

This quote reminds me of one of David's observations about the similarity between calligraphy and archery.

That Blackstone Barrier Reef Blue is very pretty - and I say that as someone who generally dislikes blue.

It really is. And it has a nice red sheen that I couldn't seem to get with my phone.
