Images of pens from this manufacturer were sent to me today from FOUNTAIN PEN HOSPITAL's mailing list. I just went to their site & the pens shown there look a LOT different & nicer than the ones featured from the FPH advertised model, which was based on "An Italian pen with a Gold nib for under $200. The pens shown from FPH looked more like the Retro 51 designs.

Several of the pens on their home site remind me of many of the KRONE special edition, $$$ pens they offer. Today was the first time I had ever heard of the brand, until this post. Hopefully someone will try one & review it.

I too only heard of them since this morning, looks mildly interesting. I agree that someone reviewing one of their pens would be really helpful, especially the 'New York'.

Thanks for starting this thread Tancred, I have been meaning to ask whether anyone has one of these pens.

I have an interest in modern artisanal pens, or pens made by small companies. So this company is a company I have looked at. I have met the owner a couple of times once at the LWES show and again in Madrid. He is an interesting chap to speak to - I found him knowledgeable and passionate about his product.

Some of the pens are fashioned in a decorative style that is not to my taste although there are several models that caught my eye. They appear to have a bit of quality to them. I was particularly impressed by the fact that they make their own nibs. I tried one pen - it was a decent writer in a standard M nib.

If the company are at a UK pen show this year I hope to support them by buying a pen.

First impressions available on an Italian forum. Can I link it here?

da vinci, you'd be delighted to see gianluca's latest products. He's a pen turner that has recently completed a demonstrator button filler.

From Glen's Pens page about the italian pen makers (http://www.marcuslink.com/pens/views/2014-06.html):

"Ancora, which dates back to 1920. It closed in 1975 but Giovanni Santini started up the company again in 1988. The company has its headquarters in Pavia. They make small quantities of hand-made pens."

I think this Santini Pens is someway related to Giovanni Santini. Actually, seems the current Ancora owner is russian. (http://ancora1919.com/eng/)

Thank you for your post. The terms of use say it is fine to post "helpful links", and I think your proposed link is exactly that. Please do post the link (I am sure a moderator will soon let me know if I have innocently led you astray :) ).

That button filler does sound interesting!

Interesting. I have two Ancora limited ediitons and they write very nicely, with flex. If Santini is an offshoot of Ancora then so much the better, as the quality is definitely there.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm planning to test one out this weekend at the Philadelphia Pen Show. Fountain Pen Hospital will be there and I confirmed they'll have some Santini Italia with them available for sale. And at a great price too (<$189).

Does anyone know of other vendors selling this brand? After looking at the Santini Italia website, I realize FPH doesn't sell the model I like best. If I pick up one this weekend, I know I'll eventually want this other style.

I picked one up yesterday and it's a wonderful pen--everything about it screams Ancora. The nib is that same unique, long-tined style and the body feels like it has the same dimensions as my Perla. I found one with a stub nib and it's magnificent.

If you're a fan of Ancora, I highly suggest you check these out.

Thanks for the update. Which model did you buy? Any chance of a picture when you get 5 mins? :)

Here are a couple of pics of the Santini Italia and my Ancora Perla. I got the New Delhi model from the Colors line and was able to find a beautiful stub nib. (Please forgive the photo quality).

These are very interesting pens. I got to play with one during my visit yesterday at FPH. I found it too irresistible not to bring one home, which was the colors Shanghai version. I have to say the printed body made it seem like a cheap $5 Chinese pen, but the feel and the nib is anything but. I particularly like the thick heavy body. It feels like it has a brass body???

Ironically I bought the pen because of the soft bouncy fine nib to use to write Chinese with!

Thank you!

The comparison with the Perla (I have the charcoal version) is particularly helpful.

!

That was exactly what held me back from buying one when I first saw them. However they are growing on me and the fact the nibs are made "in house" is probably the deciding factor in me making a purchase in 2017.

  • 1 month later...

I just purchased one of their limited edition roller ball pens - Giotto Tower - in gold. It is very heavy and seems a little unwieldy. It is almost too heavy for a suit jacket or shirt pocket and I am afraid of dropping it in everyday use. I probably will leave it in the pen case. The workmanship is beautiful but it is much heavier than any Ancora pen I have every used. I own about 10 Ancora limited edition fountain pens and the workmanship is similar but the Ancora pens are much lighter. I purchased the pen from Fountain Pen Hospital and they advertise that the pen is made from a solid block of sterling silver. It has been my experience that sterling silver is relatively light but this pen feels like it is made out of brass. It has a small stamp on the metal with the letters .925 or .926 in an oval which probably indicates some grade of silver.
