New Akkerman Ink

kazoolaw

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I want to purchase the 3 reds, 3 blues (cerulean, Kobaltblauw, and stormachtig blauw), Ruisdaels stormachtig blauw and Lievens Kardinaal Paars from the Dutch Masters collection. Can someone tell me whether their flow is reasonable enough to use in finer nibs? Especially Japanese fine which I use 95% of the time.

I would also appreciate some colour samples too since swabs supplied by akkerman seem oversaturated. Vanness had more realistic writing samples for standard range, but they haven't put up similar writing samples for the Dutch masters collection.

Thank you.

I have two: Kardinaal Pars and Stormachtig Blauw. The first is a bit on the dry side. I posted a comparison of it and Diamine Tyrian Purple here: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/278558-battle-of-the-inks-doppelgaenger-edition/?p=3766886

The second is wetter and more saturated. Cary has already posted a pic in this thread.

Well, I remember comparing inks (text + chromatography) and Voorhut Violet and Damson were identical, Hopjesbruin and Sepia were Identical, Groenmarkt Smaragd and Umber were identical, Garuda Rood and Monaco Red were identical.

This is so helpful , thank you.

Just a quick update on Vis guesses... ;) (I bought a bunch for the Toronto Pen Posse)

I will post pics once I have the time.

  1. Blauw van Vermeer = ?
  2. Dou's Emerald Groen = Emerald Green --> This to me is SALAMANDER (I am shocked too)
  3. Gele Okre van Frans = Autumn Oak --> This one is AMBER
  4. Hals Oud Bruin = Golden Brown (?) --> I believe you got this one right !!
  5. Izrael's zeeblauw - Eau de Nil
  6. Lievens Kardinaal Pars = Tyrian Purple
  7. Rembrandt's Karmozijn = Crimson
  8. Ruisdael Stomachtig Blauw = Blue/black / Oxford Blue --> This is WAY too purple to be any of your guesses. I am thinking ECLIPSE
  9. Steenrood van Vermeer = Crimson (?) --> This one is ANCIENT COPPER
  10. Van Huysun's Sapgroen = Meadow
  11. Vermeer's Kobaltblauw = Indigo
  12. Scharlaken von Jan Steen = Red Dragon

Let's have fun at guessing which Diamine inks they really are. From my previous expeirence with Akkerman inks I'm 99,99% sure they just sell Diamine inks in their bottles. My types are as gollows.

  1. Blauw van Vermeer = ?
  2. Dou's Emerald Groen = Emerald Green
  3. Gele Okre van Frans = Autumn Oak
  4. Hals Oud Bruin = Golden Brown (?)
  5. Izrael's zeeblauw - Eau de Nil
  6. Lievens Kardinaal Pars = Tyrian Purple
  7. Rembrandt's Karmozijn = Crimson
  8. Ruisdael Stomachtig Blauw = Blue/black / Oxford Blue
  9. Steenrood van Vermeer = Crimson (?)
  10. Van Huysun's Sapgroen = Meadow
  11. Vermeer's Kobaltblauw = Indigo
  12. Scharlaken von Jan Steen = Red Dragon

What do you think?

Maybe is a better behave Ancient Copper??... The jury is out on Akkerman "modifying" the inks..

The color is an exact match thou... Again, I will post pics when I get some free time (over the weekend).

I've used a lot of Indigo in the past, and am currently using Kobaltblauw, and I would disagree that they're the same. Besides, I think Indigo is already in the main Akkerman line (as #9). I'm struggling to find equivalents for Ceruleum Blauw and Kobaltblauw in the Diamine line. Anyway, I just posted reviews/show and tells of Ceruleum and Kobalt. :)

I'm not sure Akkerman #9 is the same as Diamine Indigo -- I've tried both, and I think Indigo is a touch more teal (although the two inks do look close).

Thanks, will wait for it. I don't want to use this ink unless I get some clarity about this.

Need to make some corrections...

  1. Blauw van Vermeer = ?
  2. Dou's Emerald Groen = Emerald Green --> This to me is SALAMANDER (I am shocked too) - NOPE, is not Salamander. The first assertion was done by just having a quick look at swatches. Once I compare inks side by side (on Tomoe) it was evident they are not similar.
  3. Gele Okre van Frans = Autumn Oak --> This one is AMBER or Sunshine Yellow. Amber is very close, but the real doppelgänger is Sunshine Yellow.
  4. Hals Oud Bruin = Golden Brown (?) --> I believe you got this one right !!. Can't confirm since I do not have Golden Brown to compare.
  5. Izrael's zeeblauw - Eau de Nil
  6. Lievens Kardinaal Pars = Tyrian Purple --> YES, to Tyrian Purple
  7. Rembrandt's Karmozijn = Crimson
  8. Ruisdael Stomachtig Blauw = Blue/black / Oxford Blue --> This is WAY too purple to be any of your guesses. I am thinking ECLIPSE --> CONFIRMED Eclipse.
  9. Steenrood van Vermeer = Crimson (?) --> This one is ANCIENT COPPER
  10. Van Huysun's Sapgroen = Meadow
  11. Vermeer's Kobaltblauw = Indigo --> I believe this is actually Denim.
  12. Scharlaken von Jan Steen = Red Dragon

  1. Scharlaken von Jan Steen = Red Dragon

I'm going to respectfully disagree on this one. According to the bottles I have, the Scharlaken van Jan Steen is not as close to Red Dragon as it is to Matador.

Wow, I think it is Matador, but I didn't realize that RD and M were so similar.

You can totally disagree.. it was Vis's guess.... ;) ....I haven't compare them since I don't have either one. My comparisons are in the doppelganger thread.

BTW.. they don't look that close to me.... I like to put them side by side on at least two papers... (absorbent paper and coated paper). That's how I messed up the Emerald one. My Mnemosyne swatch cards look the same... but when I put them on Tomoe... Salamander was WAY much greyer than Emerald (as it should be).

Exactly. The choice of paper, and a swab wash can reveal interesting differences (or similarities), n'est-ce pas?

I'm not going to guess. That would involve me buying the feathering Diamine inks.

Diamine makes inks for Akkermann, but they are not exact clones. A few years ago a similar test was made, with many saying the inks were a tad different.

One must realize in the last 5 of so years Diamine has made many more inks. I'm sure they cloned Akkermann. :P

Akkermann feathers a bit less than Diamine.

I have now some paper so good even Diamine don't feather, so I'll be able to enjoy the many Akkermann samples good folks sent me.

I just received a bottle of Akkerman Steenrood van Vermeer. I have loaded it into a Conway Stewart pen with a customized italic nib. I have written with it on good quality copy paper, Rhodia and Tomoe River papers.

Performance: Generally, very much like the other half-dozen Akkerman inks I have used (and most Diamine inks). That is, a bit on the dry side but good flow. Very usable for any script like italic.

Comparisons to other inks: I do not have Ancient Copper, the "same color" candidate. However I am struck by Steenrood's great similarity to Noodler's Black Swan in English Roses. The principal difference is that S in ER shades a lot more. Another similar but not identical ink is Franklin-Christoph's Urushi Red.

Not any sort of complete review, I know, but a first impression. Hope it's a bit of help for anyone on the fence.

My bottles of ink seem to be quite different.

1. Steenrood van Vermeer for me is much closer to Diamine/Cult Pens Deep Dark Orange or Diamine Brandy Dazzle (without shimmer):

fpn_1487031881__2017-02-13_185923.jpg

2. Lievens Kardinaal Paars is right in between Noodler's Dumas Tulipe Noire and de Atramentis Patchouli:

fpn_1487031924__2017-02-13_190100.jpg

3. And finally, Israels Zeeblauw is quite close to Pilot Iroshizuku's Tsuki-yo (as well as Sailor's Yama-dori, minus the exaggerated sheen):

The Diamine connection seems to be much less conclusive with the inks that I have... ;)

Doodles with the new colors. Happy with my selections for the most part, although the Lievens Kardinaal Paars is not as saturated as I usually like.
