Wow, amazing images! Thanks so much for sharing!

I plan on getting a 149 once I get into medical school to commemorate, and I love the OBBB nib, thanks again!

Yes, I, too, would like to know the answer to the question posed by PhilH above. I mean I love the OBBB but were there 3Bs. I have a tripple broad nib (not oblique) on one of my Sheaffers and I love it.

Can someone remind me why there is an O3B and not a 3B produced?

They stopped producing them in the mid 1970s. I do not have any reference for the official reason, but I think it is due to lack of demand.

I can also put forth another hypothesis. In talking to a few nibsmiths, they have pointed out that many folks who grew up in the ballpoint era tend to rotate their nibs a little as they are finger writers. Given the width of the 3B, this tendency can make it somewhat clunky to write with quickly. You also get a pretty wide line on vertical strokes which might lead to abnormally large writing to maintain legebility. The O3B addresses both these issues, and keeping it as a special request allows for people to order the pen for special occasions, like a signature pen. Just my speculation.

By the way, you can now special order, for a substantial extra fee, a bespoke nib in calligraphy width, which I think is like 6B or maybe more. Not a free option, though I bet you could ask for just about any width reasonable like a 3B.

It's the "substantial" part that's stopping me. :excl: Given I run an oblique as well as a standard, cheaper to grab the O3B. Faster, too.

But but they will etch ypur name on the nib as part of the bespoke service. Surely that is worth half the upcharge!

In all seriousness, I would like one of thr three time caligraphy nibs but I will have to see several pens first. Maybe if I ever fork over enough for a skeleton I can justify an upcharge for the bespoke nib. Maybe...

It only took 6.5 months to get the nib exchanged, but I'm now in the 149 OBBB club! The purchase bug bit and it bit hard in October :)

6.5 months from sending it in to them for a nib exchange for the O3B nib and it coming back home to me. The piston was also very heavy to turn since new making it feel like it was going to break the blind cap off, so I asked for them to lubricate the piston while they had it. They confirmed that they would give it a service. It showed up on Tuesday with the filling system still feeling like it was going to break when cleaning or filling.

That means back to MB service it goes for who knows how long

Mr Tom and Ms Ghost Plane, you two have been instrumental in deciding which nibs to pick :) I'm thrilled to have picked the O3B because of your photos and drool enticing posts about wide nibs!

Look, servicing the piston is a VERY simple procedure.

If you want, send me the pen, i'll lube it up for you and send it back. It will be FASTER.

I, of course, will not charge you a dime.

If you want to do it, let me know.

I'm the USA.

If you are interested, PM me

No pressure there! :yikes:

Seriously, I do hope you enjoy yours as much as I do. I'm so used to floating along with something that performs beautifully in all sorts of conditions that it's always a shock to walk into an office and have to deal with one of those horrific ballpoints to gouge my information into the page. :wallbash:

I can put in 8+ hours or more of serious writing without a hand cramp and you've seen pictures of some of the things our pens can do. Take a little time and play with it. Much like driving a top of the line luxury car after banging about in a student banger, the performance and cornering takes you by surprise the first time you accelerate into the fast lane. Once you realize how responsive it is and all the marvels different inks and papers help it to perform, you'll wonder why you ever used anything else. :happycloud9:
