As you’ve asked the same question that others asked, I’m wondering what the options might be concerning OBBB nibs.

With the various experienced experts regularly posting in the Montblanc forum helpful clarification might be available.

What are the possibilities for ordering a Montblanc OBBB nib at present?

My limited understanding is flawed and incomplete. Following is a summary which needs correction and improvement.

• Atelier Privé is essentially a “sky’s the limit” entirely custom pen body and nib for discerning collectors, thus an OBBB nib would be possible

• Bespoke offers wide latitude — I was directly told that a bespoke OBBB or BBB or broader nib might be ordered on any current Montblanc nib size, not only the 149

• The three current 149 models — yellow gold, red gold and platinum — may all be nib exchanged for an OBBB nib at no extra charge if within six weeks of purchase

• Skeleton pens with 149-sized nibs may be ordered with an OBBB nib — I’m unclear as to whether or not there’s a time limit on ordering

As to past 149 models no longer sold, e.g. any anniversary model, I don’t know whether or not they may be exchanged for an OBBB if a nib replacement fee is charged.

Are all contemporary special editions and limited editions based on the 146 nib, and thus unavailable for OBBB nib exchanges?

If so, does that suggest that solely through ordering a bespoke nib might OBBB nibs be obtained apart from the three current 149 models and skeleton pens?

These questions have been posed several times in recent days. Any clarification or correction would be most welcome.

Hi Tom. Here is my current understanding:

 

#6 or smaller sized nibs are limited to OBB as the widest option. That does cover more special and limited editions. Anything wider would be bespoke.

 

You can do the free swap on #9 size nibs to O3B. If you could find a 90th anniversary 149 from and authorized dealer you could swap to an O3B if they still have them in stock.

 

If you want to pay the swap fee of about $300 (I have not checked the current fee recently so it may well be more) then you can get the O3B for a 90th 149 if still in stock. This is also true for the current production 149 pens past the free exchange period. I do recall reading the #9 75th anniversary nibs are no longer available in O3B as of a few years ago.

 

I do not know what they do for skeleton pens. I assume you can get O3B in thr exchange period. Of you want one later I am guessing they can make one for you but I guess any fee would be higher than a standard 149.

 

They other large nib pen, the 1914 Heritage, only comes on BB and OBB I was told. I did not buy one so I did not confirm beyond the boutique staff.

Tom, I repeat, all the images are incredibly real, I can not get away from them. Especially the comparison of writings of different nibs OBBB well shows that each nib is a little different. Thank you very much!

That's how I was able to buy in November, a new 149 90th Anniversary of the nib F and replace the nib OBBB. Replacement nibs lasted about three weeks. I had luck. I'm very happy.

@Zaddick: earlier in 2016 MB did a factory replacement of a 75th 149 nib from M to O3B for around $365 (incl 8.25% tax). However comma, I perceive it to be a hair narrower than my 90th 149 O3B, handmade variation yada yada yada, and all the flushing in the world never starts perfectly smooth (the first millimeter of downstroke usually dry), seeming unique among my MBs.

Hmmmm...wonder if I should try a drop of detergent or 409 with next flush. That really worked for a dry starting Danitrio.

Thanks for the update. Was it a gold SE nib or the rose gold LE nib? I was thinking of the rose gold nib in my earlier comment though I was not explicit.

Rose gold. That MOP star seems it should be the standard on a 149, but a little burned out to pursue the one available on penboard.

 

Tom - you really inspire one to find a macro lens. Stunning work, fantastic lighting, you've mastered the apertures to ensure broad enough focal planes. Awesome work.
