What Pen Are You Waiting For In The Mail 2017

Put in an offer on a Conklin Duragraph Amber with a fine nib last night on eBay (madisonfinepen). The seller is based in Wisconsin and I'm in California so I woke this morning to see that they had accepted my offer! I've purchased from this seller before and had a good experience and they have a nice selection too.

I thought I had cooled on pens for a while when suddenly the Duragraph popped up in a search and its beautiful resin coloring caught my eye. I'd been wanting an orange pen too and I justified the purchase further because the only other standard cartridge pen I have is the Kaweco Sports but this Duragraph could use long international cartridges and a converter so it had a new function that I hadn't had yet..

 

Do you all use justification like this to add to your collections?

 

Well... yes, I do. Last year, I purchased a nice Picasso 915 telling myself I need another pen long enough to accept "giant" int'l cartridges.

Random impulse buy of a Bexley Prometheus in ebonite. It's coming with a B nib which is of no use to me and, such is my luck, the pen will not take my other Jowo nib units. It's no fun when you buy an unusable pen.

Last year I bought a Conklin Sleeve Filler limited edition in a brown swirl color with a medium nib. It doesn't start up right away unless I give the bladder a squeeze and I hadn't written with it in a while but used it last night too write a letter to a friend. Using it reminded me that I liked its larger size (my other pens are mostly small - Pilot Prera, Esterbrook SJ, Kaweco Sport, Pelikan 120 and M200) so it was a nice switch to use a larger pen.

Although I generally only love using Pelikans, I have been longing for a bright orange pen for many, many years (over twenty?). But most of the orange pens I have seen over the years have been special editions and thus larger pens than I like and/or well over my price limit.

 

But last week I was looking at some Pelikans on e-bay which led somehow to a lot of 5 unidentified pens that included a bright orange pen. The seller wrote that he is not a pen-person: he says he inherited a number of pens and thus was selling them off. (I know: who believes e-bay listings? But after looking at all his current auction items, I thought he was telling the truth.) I kept looking at that gorgeous orange pen and wondering if it was worth getting. And at first, no one was bidding. (Even after I began bidding, the price for all 5 was well under $100 until the hours of bidding.)

 

A little research online (that mostly linked to threads here), and I figured out that the pens were Cesare Emilianos. A few last minute bidders came out of the woodwork, but I had set a pretty high max bid because I had become obsessed with getting these pens. So I got 5 very beautiful pens for about $200, which I think is a pretty good price.

 

The few posts I found about Cesare Emiliano pens describe their nibs as "sweet," and I also see that many rave about the beauty of the Italian resins, so I am hoping for the best. I will update and post pictures in the Italian section when they arrive next week!

 

So 2017 is getting an exciting start!

The four white Kakunos and the Retro Pop Metropolitans. And, if everthing goes well, I may just buy the Lamy 2000 in Makrolon, Lamy Dialog 3 in palladium and piano white, and the Vanishing Point Desert Orange and Gunmetal Grey.

Mamajones, I look forward to seeing the photos of your bright orange pen! Here's my Duragraph, ETA on Monday! I hope the nib isn't too fine - based on reviews, the Conklin nibs run finer like Japanese nibs. My Conklin Sleeve Filler has a medium nib that I like.

My fiancée's family gave us some money for Christmas and, since I believe it is a crime to use gift money sensibly, I ordered a Karas Kustoms Ink with my share. I've gone for the stonewashed orange with a copper section. Very excited!

 

Only problem is that the shipping is expected to be three weeks, but that just gives me time to enjoy my Christmas pens before it arrives.

Here's a variation on the "waiting for the pen in the mail"... won a couple auctions to start the new year and followed the tracking. As usual, right? Except when they said "Out For Delivery" there was 14 inches of snow on the ground and it was 11 below F. After two days with no mail service a "snow emergency" was finally declared so the local govts were able to free up some $$resources, which meant we finally got a snowplow through the neighborhood. Cool,eh? Well, not so much, if you're waiting for the mailman to bring a vintage pen... the plow pushed all the snow up against the side of the street so instead of only 10 or 12 inches deep in front of the box it was now well over two feet deep and extended about five feet off the sidewalk. Center of the street is awesome though

 

My biggest worry is that my pens are sitting in the back of some postal truck in the back of the PO (I saw the trucks all there yesterday, they aren't going out)... freezing their little Pelikan tailfeathers off.

Supposed to start raining tonight, but no guess when the mail will finally get back to the neighborhoods.

Trying to decide if I will tell that to my brother-in-law or not (he's Postmaster in a small town in SE Massachusetts, having worked his way up from doing utility routes).

Okay, back on topic....

For me it's a black Esterbrook (can't tell the size, I'm guessing SJ) with a 9556 nib (which is, weirdly because it's not particularly exotic, one of the 9xxx series nibs I *didn't* have). Just won the auction. ETA is not for over a week, though. I'm worrying about the weather now as well, after seeing the early evening national news, which included footage of some truck skidding along a highway in Alabama someplace (the seller is in Georgia).

Let another listing slip past me yesterday for just a 9556 nib unit -- slightly more expensive and slightly higher s/h charges than what I paid for the pen. So apparently I'm off to a good start for 2017....

Currently waiting for a Lamy Vista with EF nib. I'd somehow lost mine (or someone helped themselves to it), it had a great nib and flow so I was gutted when I realized it was missing. So a month later and I had to order a new one.

Aw, that sucks. Those Lamy EF nibs sure are a joy to write with, though, aren't they? I put one on my old AL-Star a while ago and now the thing is in frequent use for the first time since... oh, 2010?

Anyway, I'm waiting for a beautiful red Sheaffer Imperial. I always wanted an inlaid nib, but most models were way too expensive, and I'm not a big fan of the Targa's crisp, sharp lines in conjunction with that nib.

And now I'll get a reasonably-prized pen in my favorite color with a nice, 14K medium nib. Sweet!

 

Now if I could only get my hands on a Geha Goldschwinge with equal ease...

I'm still waiting on a Kaigelu 316 I bought back in November on eBay. I also bought a Lamy Safari set (white pen, a cartridge of each color and a converter) and a Faber-Castell LOOM from Massdrop and they should be shipping in about two weeks. Finally, I just won a Conklin Duragraph Blue Ice on eBay and that should be here by this weekend hopefully.

It's not a pen, but I'm also waiting on a replacement barrel for my TWSBI Diamond 580AL, since I stupidly cracked it by twisting and rotating it on the inkwell.
