Mont Blanc Replacement Nib

I have a MB Meisterstuck 144 from the mid 1980's - medium nib. Are there any options for replacement nibs besides an authorized MB dealer? I'd like to replace/swap it out with a F or EF nib.

Thanks,

john

You could send it to a nib meister (some of them have spares) and they'll either sell you one or offer to grind yours down. But I think they'll charge as much as Montblanc's nib exchange AND from what I have noticed with nibs.com they'll take twice as long.

If not Montblanc, I would personally suggest buying a nib from eBay and fitting it to your pen yourself or have anyone with expertise help you.

Hello John,

If you can get to a pen show, a nib replacement on a 144 will require about 30 seconds of surgery. You could look for a 144 with the nib you desire, and ask the seller if a swap is possible. There are often quite a few used 144s at major pen shows. In my experience, wider nibs tend to be more popular than narrow ones. Someone might be willing to simply exchange front ends with you, so nib removal won't be necessary. As Pravda suggests, a custom grind is also a possibility. Chrissy's suggestion is a good one, but only for a new & very, very lightly used pen. If you send your 30-year-old pen to Montblanc, you will be offered the opportunity to purchase a new 144 nib, not an exchange.

Good luck with your hunt. I suspect someone here reading your thread would be willing to do the trade. Perhaps post a Want to Trade request in the sales area. The advantage of a pen show, however, is that you can examine the F/EF nib, dip test it, and be sure it is perfect for you.

Enjoy your day,

Barry

I would send it away to a local nib master and have your current nib modified.

Cost would be ~$50 compared to $300+ for a new nib - be prepared for a 4-16 week leadtime.

MB repair centres also keep your old nib when they complete a nib exchange, so don't factor in selling your old to recoup some costs.

I asked them about this. I was advised that they don't keep the old one if you ask for it back.

Thanks, Barry. Timing is everything. My local pen show - Philadelphia is in 3 weeks!
