Screw-On Cap And Ink Spill

Hi there,

I own Pilot Custom Maple Wood Fountain Pen and except for its screw-on cap, overall, I am very much satisfied with this fountain pen.

The removal movement of the screw-on cap seems to be causing an ink spill inside the cap. Yes, even though the pen has a screw-on cap, sometimes, just unscrewing the cap is not enough to remove the cap. I would still need to snap the cap off from the barrel to in order to uncap the pen which, I guess, creating a vacuum and causing it to suck the ink out of the pen, resulting in a huge ink spill.

Recently, I had chance to visit Fountain Pen Hospital in NYC. I had the pen with me and explained the issue to the owner. However, the problem didn’t occur for that time, Murphy Rules*, so probably he just assumed the cap wasn’t turning smoothly then applied silicone grease on the threads, yet it didn’t fix the problem.

The cap seems to be faulty but I can’t really be sure because the problem doesn’t occur every time. Specifically, it doesn’t occur when it is fully inked or un-inked. Do you guys also experience similar problems with this pen? Any suggestions?

I had a similar problem with a Pilot recently. Because I had two, almost identical pens, and didn't remove the leaking pen from service, I got to experience the leak over time. I finally found that the section had a previously invisible crack--just the sort of thing one might expect from a drop on the floor or a snap of the cap. Very minor, but when my finger was against it, ink would seep through onto my finger. If left too long and too active in a purse, the pen's ink would flow into the cap.
