The Al Star reminds me of the aqua Safari that was so popular

If you have petrol (fuel) on water the light will shimmer bluish from it. Hence the German name, I think.

Maybe someone should suggest that the English name should be "Petrol Spill".....you know, just to be clear.

 

I wonder if the safari is going to have the same matte, non-slippery finish that the lilac had, or if it will be the slick finish of most of the colors.

I remember that "Petrol" is the German fashion term for dark turquoise or teal. I always thought it was an awkward term. "Flieder" is dark purple.

 

The teal one looks nice; I find there's a relation between recent Pelikan M200 SE colors (dark purple, teal) and Lamy's.

I'll definitely get a Petrol Safari. I think it will pair nicely with my Dark Lilac. I wonder if they'll having a matching ink as well?

Are you sure about "Flieder" being dark purple? Because "Flieder" means "lilac", and should imo be of a lighter hue.. But then colour names don't always match the real thing.. LIke Pelikan Tanzanite, if I came across a Tanzanite the colour of that ink I wouldn't buy it.. Though I have read it's supposed to look like Tanzanites before the heating process

It's nice that they add new colours like this every year. I'm looking to get an Al-star but I don't find any of their colours that appealing. I wish they made a normal black finish with silver clip and nib like the Safari. I find that the black nibs are less smooth and I appreciate the silver contrast of the clip and nib.

Looking forward to Petrol. Before I read that it was German for teal, I wondered if there'd be any iridescence to it like the thin multi-coloured sheen you'd get on petrol on top of water! I'm guessing probably not but it'll be cool to have one as an Al-Star

Because of the warning, and because it appeals to me, I chose the graphite finish, thinking that scratches would be less conspicuous.

AlStar colours is just anodised aluminium, anodising is simply dyeing the aluminium oxide layer a different colour other than its natural clear colourless state.

 

Anodised layer will wear thru after much handling, aluminium will scratch & dint especially at the edges and ends. Most obvious on the darker colours.

 

The only colour that won't fade is the silver aluminium.

Probably just usual nib variance, some smoother than others.

Spend a few minutes reworking does wonders.

Not sure which of these I like better. I would like to see better photos of both.

 

My Al Star is the original aluminum finish, which was discontinued a couple of years ago. Has served me well for the last 18 years. Dings? A few. I call them character marks. I have considered several over the past few years as a companion. Including the Rose Gold LX. But even though my Al Star is currently inked, it hasn't been seeing much use. And that has stopped me from getting another.

Anodizing is an electrochemical process that produces an oxide layer on a metal that creates a durable corrosion resistant surface.

The process can also be modified to add color to the oxide surface.

It is not a simply a "dyeing" or coloring of the aluminum metal.

I like them both, but particularly the Safari. It will make a nice match for my Dark Lilac, since purple and turquoise are my two favorite colors.

The Pacifica Al-Star looks lovely! That shade of blue is one of my favorites.

 

Petrol is a color that my monitor has trouble with; I think I'll need to see it in person or in a few reviews to know if it's the blackened teal I love.
