Dear Perplexed,

Since I think the painted ladies are lovely, I'm still not sure I see the problem. For example, I think this is awesome.

Keep in mind, that I live in Las Vegas, the City of Neon and Slots, so I may not be the standard of good taste.

And I did find a nice dark green, though not as lovely as Sherwood Green:

Perhaps you should remind him that it's really good that you don't use black ink?

When my parents were building their victorian home, my mom had sketches of the house everywhere and then then she painted the sketches and set them around the frame of the house to look at the colors in different light. So, it seems perfectly reasonable to me that you are doodling with colors you are considering. Moreover, I think it's likely that you are attracted to those colors. So, yeah, I'm still not seeing the problem... unless the HOA forbids you using matching ink colors?

Sincerely,

Hah! Love the color scheme. But the architectural style is too florid for me (although the turret with cupola is appealing) -- I prefer Arts and Crafts (although most of the bungalows are too small) and American Four-Square.

Ironically, if the interiors for our (sort of) Four-Square were redone to be authentic to the style of the house, I'd be looking at mustard yellows and olive greens, matching the tile around the fireplace in the dining room; and those are colors I mostly don't like (I'm a "Light Summer" and those definitely don't match the palette of wearable colors for someone with blue undertones to skin color and ash tones to hair; OTOH, my husband is probably a classic Autumn, because while his hair is/was brown he has (had) copper highlights.)

Dear Inky,

I am calling on your vast ink experience to tackle a question that has long been debated. What makes Mr. Pen's Radiant Blue so, well, radiant? It was discussed in this thread and others and the suggestion is that Radiant Blue starts life as Diamine Royal Blue to which four drops of some special "brightener" is added. Any thoughts as to what kind of creatures "brighteners" could be?

Thanks in advance,

Dingy Writer

Dear Dingy

The UK has a number of defunct/decommissioned Nuclear Power Stations. As a part of the decommissioning process, the Cherenkov Radiation has been extracted and contained in special Klein Jars.

I am under the impression that a small amount of this special radiation has been added to the ink to make glow like that.

Either that, or Laundry Bluing.

Dear Dingy,

I'm afraid that Mr. Waites may be correct. If Radiant blue were made in Nevada, we would assume it was Radiator fluid from UFO aka Weather Balloon. Of course, we believe in NEON as a form of expressionism.

All that being said, I don't disagree that laundry blueing agent can have that effect. For a less expensive attempt at color replication, try adding Sargasso Sea to Royal Blue. I think you'll see a real improvement in the radiance.

Sincerely, Radiant Ruby

Ah yes, the color system. My mom did people and determined their seasons when I was a teen. The whole family got done. I too, am a summer. The classification names you see now are different than what I remember. With blue eyes and a light brown hair, what they call light summer now is probably right. I forget the term used back then. My parents are both Winters, if I recall correctly my sister is an Autumn. Don't remember my brothers. (Mom and I are the only blue eyes in the family)

When the book first came out, there were only the four palettes. But then eventually someone figured out that some Summers can wear metallic gold, and such. So they sub-divided each "season" into three palettes. Which gave me a better green color range than "Institutional Green".... I used to have a swatch book to take shopping, but I lost it. Ironically, when they changed over to a total of 12 palettes, I got mis-categorized as "Warm Spring".... (Well, the two palettes DID share an interesting bright magenta color).

I first ran across the book when I was crashing at someone's house years ago. There was a copy of the book in the house so a bunch of us were looking at it over breakfast. One person had gone to bed in a back bedroom way before the rest of us (who were mostly in sleeping bags on the living room floor) and got up an hour after the rest of us. She's a Scandinavian blonde -- that sort of white blonde. And was wearing a bright pink turtleneck. Someone said "And Jane is obviously a Spring!" And Jane

(who really wasn't completely awake even though she'd gotten way more sleep) said "Whaaaaa?" B)

I'm reminded of Michael Moore's film "Roger and Me". One of the laid off GM workers has become a color consultant and, cheerily explains what it is and tells us she's a whatever; later in the film, she tearfully confesses that's she's mis-identified herself and she's actually a whichever.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Dear Inky,

Sometimes, when I browse lists of TV shows I may want to watch (in my off-moments from the FPN, of course), I see shows entitled Ink Master, or Black Ink Crew. For some reason I always think they are about ink for fountain pens, but they always turn out to be about tattoo ink, and the people involved.

How do I avoid disappointment?

Yours in Ink,

DC

Dear My Ink,

I too am flummoxed. Every day on my way to work, I pass four Ink Parlors and much to my disappointment, they don't sell ink or even use fountain pens. When I search on eBay for powdered ink, I can find only tattoo inks and when I search online for new and interesting inks, I find weird stuff like how to use cremation remains to make a permanent ink. (First, that's a whole different level of writing with mom instead of writing to mom. Second, those companies show you how to make the remains into the body ink - and that mom tattoo becomes really creepy).

So, I think you are going to have to give up your day job to make television shows about fountain pen ink. While this is a niche market, you are one of the experts as the published author of the Newbies Guides. I'm sure that your neighbor, Hugh Jackman will support you in your endeavors (especially if he continues being the MB ad man).

Now, if your beloved spouse does not allow you to give up your employment, you may be forced to give up TV entirely and watch pen movies on the Internet. You may find that this gives you more time to create your own movies / shows, but only until your kitty discovers that your lap is available. Also be warned that many cats enjoy spilling ink.

Please let me know about any solutions you may have found to avoid the ink disappointment.

Indelibly yours.

PS - I've tried to insist that Tattoo parlors be denoted as tattoo establishments and not Ink parlors, but the local licensing division was unresponsive. Personally, my first protest is not to have any tattoos. (Unless, MB gives me a million dollars, then I might get an MB tattoo, but until then absolutely not.)

Dear Inky,

In this state, we have the strange situation where the owner of a "Tattoo Establishment" is not allowed to own a Harley Davidson motorbike. Technically, they are not allowed to be a member of an outlaw motorbike gang, but you have to own a Harley to be in one of those...

I wonder if owning a Harley Davidson fountain pen would qualify one for membership???

Inkily yours

In response to your pondering, I proffer these Pinky and the Brain responses (please note the inclusion of the fountain pen, and then 3 responses later the tattoo parlor).
