Dear Inky - Inky T O D - Topic O' Day

Oh, just to follow up, I signed a sale agreement on behalf of a client. We put serious thought into the ink choice. Today it was Momiji. And yes, it's a "Legally Valid" color here in Nevada.

I hate it when people make stuff up like "legally valid", so I searched the code here where I live and could not find one word about the color of ink a person uses to complete or sign legal documents. (There were rules about the color of printing for ballots and such, but that was for the state employee responsible for having them printed up...)

Next time I have to fill out or sign a government form, and it says something silly like "black ink only", I may consult a lawyer first and then use De Atramentis Document Fuchsia. B) (I used some of it for mixing a custom color, and now I've got nothing to do with the rest of it...)

When I refinanced my house in the spring of 2015, one of the pens and inks I took with me was my TWSBI 580 with the B Tomahawk stub by Art. The ink in said pen? KWZI Iron Gall Turquoise. The closing agent got a real kick out of that one, as that is what I used. (the other pen was a Pelikan M205 Fine with something not as interesting - maybe 4001 Blue Black?)

Dear Dizzy,

That's a beautiful pen. I know you don't normally match inks, but I do think we should send you over a few more amazing reds. I think you should ink up with JHerbin Rouge Hematite and De Atramentis Kermesin. (You may have samples of these in the recent Swinky Swap ink exchange). In your collection I noticed that you don't have in purple leaning blues - is there a reason? If not, may I suggest either Diamine Sargasso Sea it sheens and it's super saturated like many of your other colors. It's also a lot of fun for mixing and I can add posts for recipes. All that being said, if I were to whisper a few suggestions to your Santa, I'd recommend any of the following for you: Private Reserve Ebony Purple (it's a stealth black), Private Reserve DC American Blue (I prefer DCSS, but AB is a lot less fussy), De Atramentis Red Black (this ink looks purple on some papers, black on others and still red on others, it's pretty cool), Graf von Faber Castell Moss Green (if Santa is feeling a little flush), or Rohrer and Klinger Verdegris as another dark ink that is surprising.

Please, do let us know what Santa brings.

There is a PIF I just won on its way. Levenger Amethyst.

The Blue Cashmere I had was somewhat purple leaning. (it dried up, poor seal on the bottle it was in. It was mixed very dry as well. Nevada desert dry (4.x%) ) I know some people think Serenity Blue leans purple a little. I don't see it personally. Good suggestions though.

Dear Besotted,

What's the problem? Well, maybe you should buy another bottle, and perhaps a green pen in the same color?

Inky

I have it in a coordinating pen and 2 that don't coordinate, but the problem is that I am answering multi-color letters in only one color.

It's a great mixing ink and will make any dry ink flow. So, let me know how it goes!

OOO, more great inks. I think you'll enjoy them. If I may suggest, reconstituting that blue Cashmere? I'd love to know if it can be done easily.

Dear Inky,

I am making my own little swab library. I have two papers, Rhodia and G Lalo Blue. I would like to have a third paper, but I can't decide what to include. Part of me wants to find some really, really nice rag paper, another part of thinks I should use printer paper since that's what I am mostly going to be writing on, and finally I could use yellow legal pad for the colour variation. If I can only pick one (for a library) what would you suggest?

Signed,

Dear Perplexed,

Colorswabs are a funny thing, mine contain lots of little ghosts. I've tried several different approaches - the backs of business cards, artists tile sets, index cards and more recently a journal with TR paper. While I still refer to all of the swatches, the set that I touch the most frequently are the ones in the single book with paper that I love (the TR journal by GatzBCN), but the ones that I refer to the most often are the ones written on the worst possible paper that I scanned and uploaded. I refer to these because they are stored digitally and because I can compare the ink at it's worst with the ink at it's best (in the journal).

So, what reason do you want for the swabs? If you want to see the ink at it's best, you already have some nice paper. If you want to remember what the ink looks like in action, use the office copy paper.

No matter what you choose, please show us some samples and let us know what you decided to do.

Sincerely, still playing with paper.

Dear Fell Down,

You have my complete empathy. First let me advise against hiding the inks. Nothing good will come of this sort of deception. Second, if you find that you are beating up teenagers for their lunch money to fund your ink purchases, then you need to seek professional help.

I'm sure you have already tried the simple solution: Convert the wonderful (since he cooks) husband to the amazing world of ink. Since he uses ballpoints you probably can't convince him to change over to FPs but have you considered the old stylographic pens or the modern rollerballs that use FP ink? One concern, he might want to use your ink.

Second Option: As him if he prefers an equally colorful shoe habit. 1 pair Christian Louboutin Ha Why shoes $995. Now, they do take up a lot less room than say 585 ink samples. Given that the 585 ink samples should distract you for about 585 hours, that's a great investment. Now, don't forget that the shoes will require you to have the appropriate place to go, the appropriate outfit for you AND he will need to escort you in an equally colorful outfit. (That should make him quake in his otherwise reasonably soled shoes).

Option Three: Barter. Buy him a pasta maker that he wants *only if you like pasta* in return for no comments about the equal dollar value of inks.

Now, I'm certain these are not the only options you have, but hopefully this has provided a giggle.

Sincerely,

Inky, who would love a set of such colorful heels and would promise to wear them to court.

Unfortunately he knows me way too well -- if I came home with shoes like that he'd be calling a shrink. Heck -- *I'd* be calling a shrink.... (my shoes for the wedding were a $7 pair of white leather ballet flats -- and I mean like ballet students wear).

Oh, and to answer the other post, I hadn't actually watched the video (I just remembered the song from back in the day), so I TOTALLY forgot about the FP verse.... :headsmack:

I pitched it. I debated trying to reconstitute it and decided not too. I still have the bottle though.

I just did a reconstitute tonight on the black cashmere.

My original mix job was using a 150 ml mason jar, dumped the powder out of the jar it was in (round metal cap from Hobby Lobby) Added about 30-32 ml distilled water and shook well. Then put it in an empty Pelikan 4001 (62.5 ml) bottle I had. I guess we will see how it pans out. I had originally mixed to 30 ml.

I kind of figured. He still seems like an awesome guy. I read the post to my son who offered to make me colorful shoes out of legos. I think it is plot to buy more legos.

We went to a reception for a recently married couple this evening (they had so many family members that most friends couldn't get invited to the wedding). The wedding topper on the cake was apparently the one that was used on the "real" wedding reception's cake, and was made of Legos, with the Lego bride hand painted to match the decoration on Amy's wedding gown. I'm sorry now I didn't get a photo of it....

I'm not of the Legos generation. We had Tinkertoy at our house growing up. A standard size can and one of the ginormous ones that I think was about 3' high and about 8" across (think of it as the diameter of a #10 can). The problem I have with Legos is that so many of the sets now seem to involve "How to make this X" (rather than "How to make a bunch of things, and one of the things you *could* make is this X" -- which is still not as good, IMO, as "How to put the pieces together: what do you think you could make? Here's a few possibilities....").

Legos, Lincoln Logs AND Tinkertoys at my house growing up. Erector sets were around, but when I asked for one one year, I was told no. If I recall correctly they weren't cheap. Certainly more expensive than the others.

Legos were you can make one thing? Not my cup of tea. My in laws had the giant legos for the grandkids.

Legos do give you directions to build something, but once you know how they work you can build anything you want. My granddaughter and I build new structures out of our bricks all the time.

Question time:

Dear Inky,

My husband seems disturbed that the colors of paint that I have picked for our home mirror my ink choices. What can I tell him to ease his fears?

Perplexed

P.S. I still haven't found a good paint for Sherwood Green. It would be nice if paint had shading don't you think?

Dear Perplexed,

Since I think the painted ladies are lovely, I'm still not sure I see the problem. For example, I think this is awesome.

Keep in mind, that I live in Las Vegas, the City of Neon and Slots, so I may not be the standard of good taste.

And I did find a nice dark green, though not as lovely as Sherwood Green:

Perhaps you should remind him that it's really good that you don't use black ink?

When my parents were building their victorian home, my mom had sketches of the house everywhere and then then she painted the sketches and set them around the frame of the house to look at the colors in different light. So, it seems perfectly reasonable to me that you are doodling with colors you are considering. Moreover, I think it's likely that you are attracted to those colors. So, yeah, I'm still not seeing the problem... unless the HOA forbids you using matching ink colors?

Sincerely,

Missing the Painted Ladies
