Are the standard nibs #6 size? If so, would I be able to swap them for a Nemosine, Bock, or Goulet (or other standard JoWo) #6?

I'm eagerly awaiting the next group buy so I don't miss out--I appreciate all the great pictures folks are sharing of their new pens!

The (on the eyedropper models) ambitious 35mm nibs are about the same as a JoWo #6 and can be swapped around with nibs of like size. It may require you to heat set the feed, but should fit quite nicely :) at least in my experience.

I think I will just get eyedroppers next time for their flexibility. I hear next group buy is for a number 5 which looks a BIG pen.The Jowo unit nib is lovely but you can chop and change more with an eyedropper. I got one of each last time. I am new to eyedroppers though. I am using a Guider one at the moment and it is lovely but only issue I have is having the blurping when air volume exceeds ink in barrel. I have to keep opening it to check. I will ink up the Ranga next :)

I think your definition of 'flexibility' is a little different from mine ;)! You're probably right, an eyedropper pen can accommodate a wider variety of nib brands (because you can heat set the ebonite feed more easily) - but the pens with screw-in nibs can more easily accommodate changes the in *size* or *grind*, as long as you're prepared to pay a little extra to buy replacement units (custom ground) from fpnibs.com or the like. [You can probably also swap nibs from different manufacturers into the nib units, but the plastic feeds are harder to heat set without permanently changing their shape.]

I also like the fact that with my screw-in Rangas I have the *option* of removing the cartridge converter, and using the pen in eyedropper-filled mode - but I rarely need that large an ink capacity, and it's easier to monitor ink levels if you can unscrew the grip section and directly eyeball the cartridge converter. Eyedropper pens are eyedropper-only; cartridge converters are both/and.

Some people really like having a barrel full of ink, and the capacity to try a wide variety of nibs from different manufacturers - if that's you, the eyedropper option is probably the way to go. has its own appeal. If (like me) you're happy to invest in a few different JoWo (or Schmidt) #6 nib units, and you want to avoid burping / blurping issues, there are definite advantages to paying a little extra and buying the screw-in version.

Well yup true I bought one Jowo medium and one eyedropper from Mr Kandan and before one Schmidt and one Eyedropper from Mr Rao as well. I like the screw ins for their smoothness (both JoWo and Schmidt) so see no need to mess around grinding or sanding (I am fairly new to fountain pens and would probably screw the job up) but I like the traditional character of the eyedroppers and ebonite feeds. We will see how much the new pens are!

Thanks very much--now I just have to wait for the next chance (it's killing me)!

I received my Model 3 in Black/Forest Green ripple earlier this week and I am very pleased. The quality of the pen is exceptional for the price. As other have mentioned, the shipping packaging was a sturdy cloth sewn covering over a durable pen box. The addition of a small eye-dropper pen to the box was a very nice surprise (it is a nice writer too).

The colors of the ebonite are bright enough to be interesting but still conservative enough for office use. I ordered the polished finish and am very pleased with the quality of the job. The pen is a nice size in my hand unposted; the cap can be posted but that seems to make it unwieldy.

I ordered my pen with a Jowo fine nib; the nib unit fits the section nicely and the nib wrote well right out of the box.

The converter supplied with the pen is functional and unremarkable but seems to fit well. The pen has a nice weight, not too heavy and not too light. The section fits my hand very well and I like the lip at the bottom of the section. My only critique of the pen is that the threads on the body for the cap are slightly long and extend very slightly out from under the cap when closed. This is a very minor issue and I am sure a result of the hand-made aspect of the pen.

Overall I am very pleased; this is my first Ranga pen but I am sure it will not be the last. It is rare to be able to purchase a piece of craftsmanship of this quality for the price I paid.

Anyone order the blue black ripple or a solid black finish and care to post a picture?

The pics I posted previously were for the teal blue black ripple 03 in matte. I did the pictures outside where the colors pop more. Inside the teal blue is far more muted.

I don't think they explicitly have one called blue black, but to me the teal blue black is very much a blue black. I think Peyton Street pens has pics of the same but in a smooth finish but they call it smooth ripple blue green.

Inked: Aurora Optima EF (Pelikan Tanzanite); Franklin Christoph Pocket 20 Needlepoint (Sailor Kiwa Guro); Sheaffers PFM I Reporter/Fine (Diamine Oxblood); Franklin Christoph 02 Medium Stub (Aurora Black); Platinum Plaisir Gunmetal EF (Platinum Brown); Platinum Preppy M (Platinum Blue-Black). Leaded: Palomino Blackwing 602; Lamy Scribble 0.7 (Pentel Ain Stein 2B); Uni Kuru Toga Roulette 0.5 (Uni Kuru Toga HB); Parker 51 Plum 0.9 (Pilot Neox HB)

That is a beauty. I am just debating between a black 3C and black 8, with ambitious or jovo nib. Unfortunately Jowo nib option is 30 bucks more and ambitious only available in group buy, which I am impatient for.

Mine arrived yesterday. Thank you!!

Model 3, Green Ripple regular ebonite, C/C filler, gold colored clip, Goulet JoWo bi-color medium steel nib

Model 3C, White-Blue Swirl premium ebonite, C/C filler, silver colored clip, Goulet JoWo plain medium steel nib

The JoWo nib units were not available from Ranga when I ordered and it was not clear if they would be available for this buy, so I ordered the Ranga pens tapped for JoWo units and ordered the JoWo nib units from Goulet. The Goulet JoWo units fit the Ranga pens perfectly.

And with a Pelikan M800 stuck in the middle for size comparison

We can sometimes be inconsistent with colors ..... blue ripple is the same as blue green ripple, and it is more like a dark teal or aquamarine with black ripple.
