TMLee, I found your posts when searching on Daiso paper reviews for fountain pens, and stumbled on your 355 Mini experiments, which are terrific (and I really like the simplicity of them). Your beautiful work encouraged me to attempt some 355 Mini homages!

I think your posts sharing your work should carry a warning: "Reader may get sucked into another hobby, proceed at your own risk!"

One question I have for you is whether you tracking the number of people you have inspired to try their own hand at making a journal for themselves, in the same way that you are tracking the # of journals you have made? What number am I? :)

Once I figure out the forums (and where to post, and posting etiquette) I'll share some photos. I've been using an old book of maps for Portland Oregon (I don't like calling them old, but at 20 years I guess they are. But not *vintage* yet), and some origami paper, per your suggestion. Lots of mistakes, but also LOTS of FUN!

Welcome ceramicmj to FPN ,

Thank you for your kind comments.

Erm...

No i dont know how many pple I have inspired.

And how does one track that anyway ?😁

Since you have found use for DAISO notebooks, you may want to consider making B6 sizes , ie, B5 folded into half .

Or making cahiers too.

Useful size.

I make my own planners. 😊

Dont forget to floss too. 😁

Thank you, I'm happy to be here! I'm pretty sure I'm not #1 on the inspiration list, since it seems you started 10 years ago - the beginning postings continue to be very helpful in answering a bunch of my questions. Sharing your learning process made it less intimidating! Using the 355 Mini style to learn techniques and not be afraid to mess up has been great - it's a really good size to experiment with - fast, simple.

I totally want to try the larger size - I'm saving the Apacia-like notebooks for the "nice" ones (they are down to 30 pages now), once I try the 2-needle coptic stitch and a pocket and an elastic :D . I have been experimenting on the "kraft" and some other basic notebooks.

Portland doesn't have a Daiso, so I stocked up as much as seemed reasonable. I would have gotten a lot more, but I had witnesses to my shopping and luggage weight limits . Until I get back to Los Angeles or Seattle, that'll have to do.

Anyway, thank you again for the inspiration, I look forward to seeing your future work!

Neat job! Paiseh :) but it's first time I stumbled across this thread even after so long on FPN.

Am travelling & coincidentally currently in SG. Was wondering why Daiso in SG sells quite a bit of bookbinding supplies, wondered why buys them. We don't get that in AU afaik & I don't remember seeing that stock up in MY either. Saw Daiso sold bookbinding tape but couldn't find the gum for perfect binding.

btw using Awl can make holes too big/tapered, have you considered drilling? Daiso sells miniature finger-twist drills, smallest is 1.0 & 1.5mm I think. For smaller drillbits (need pin vice) like 0.5mm I buy from electronic component suppliers eg @SimLim used for drilling printed circuit boards PCBs.

Haha ...

thanks ,

a warm welcome anyway .... 😊

Lots of topics here in this forum ...

Cant say Ive read them all too ...

Well ... DAISO only stocks things that sell.

If they dont sell well, they dont get restocked.

I also have a feeling they have some kind of store policy to bring in new stuff , to keep the shopping experience fresh

Yes awls in general are tapered.

Thats why I have a variety.

Each has its advantages .

The drill bits are not small enough and I dont think they make a good alternative.

Drilling takes away material.

A needle pierces to make an opening, which can reseal depending on how you finish that puncture.

I use a large sharp needle - like those they use to stitch tarpaulins or leather.

They are triangular when you look head-on at its point.

The idea is to cut thru the material producing a triangular cut as you pierce.

So it seals back on itself since no material has been removed.

This is clearly evident in leather stitching.

Needles are unlike awls.

Needles are uniform in their shank.

Awls are tapered.

I use needles to pierce to get uniform sized holes.

Awls carry a risk in making holes that can be too large than desired due to its taper as you pierce deeper.

But yes, micro drill bits have great applications, especially in hobby crafting.
