Ink For Extra Fine Nibs

I have a Sheaffer Snorkel with an EF nib. The first ink that really worked well in it was (modern) Skrip Violet. Weirdly enough, vintage Skrip Peacock didn't work all that well.

I also have a Parker 51 Vac with an EF nib and I've been running Skrip Blue through it since I got it repaired in June. I had Ron Zorn do the work, and I thought the nib was a bit scratchy, and he opened up the tines for me a bit. While I'm not going suddenly go EF on everything, I am more pleased with the pen than I thought possible.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I used Noodler's Black in my Pilot CH912 (PO), which is a very extra-fine nib, with no problems. Then I switched to Platinum Carbon Black, and it does feel smoother. So, smooth then smoother, FWIW.

Monteverde Blue is lubricated and plays nice in my Sailor and Platinum F nibs.

I use Noodlers Blue Eel in my preppy 0.2 EF.

Be Happy, work at it. Namaste

I'm often using an EF, for both editing work on a variety of papers and my own journals and notes. Among the inks I've used with good results lately: Diamine Bilberry (and I have samples of Midnight and Oxford coming as next on my list...), Diamine Syrah, Noodler's Navajo Turquoise, and J. Herbin Perle Noire for quite decent black ink.

Nearly all of my pens have XF nibs; I've had good experiences with Iroshizuku Tsutsuji (pink), Rohrer & Klingner Magenta, R & K Solferino (also pink/purple), Iroshizuku Murasaki-shikubu (purple), Iroshizuku Ku-jaku (turquoise), and Waterman South Seas Blue (turquoise).

I've been on a quest to see if I could commit all Seven Deadly Sins in a single day. Finally, it dawned on me I shouldn't try for the One Day Wonder Prize for all seven in one day. It's simply out of any question as you can't commit decent sloth while busily ticking the other six off your crowded "to do" list. -- ViolinWriter

I use only extra-fine nibs in my fountain pens and I only use fountain pens. I do not have troubles such as you describe, so I believe you are either using too much pressure when you write or your nibs need some attention.

When you write, only apply enough pressure to hold the nib against the paper. If your nib makes even the slightest indention in your paper, you are using too much pressure. If this is the case, ease up on the pen and two things will happen: 1) your handwriting will improve; and, (2) the scratchiness you are experiencing will vanish.

If it is not a matter of too much pressure, then it is one of nibs in need of attention. First, check with a loupe to make sure that the nib is properly aligned. If alignment is not the problem, then it is a matter of smoothing. Before I go any further, let me say that I believe it is a myth that all extra-fine nibs automatically need smoothing. I have had a great many that were not in need of any smoothing right out of the box. Now, to start the smoothing process, start small and with a method that will provide some positive results with the least chance for causing damage. Get a grocery sack or other brown bag and make a few, large, "figure-eight-shapes. See if that takes care of the scratchy problem. If that does not take care of the problem, then progress to the micro mesh.

As to inks, I use Noodler's Old Manhattan Black, Noodler's Legal Lapis (a blue-black that I use on occasion, Parker's Quink, Pelikan 4001, and Mont Blanc Black. All my inks are blacks (because I am an old cuss that is having trouble breaking the habit of a lifetime), all are sufficiently wet, and all provide sufficient lubrication.

I hope this is of some help. As a fellow extra fine enthusiast, I wish you all the best in finding a satisfactory solution to your problem.

-David (Estie).

I don't suppose you've ever created a writing sample for all your black inks that you can point us (me) to ?

For future reference, I enclose a link to a 'Google Custom Search' page that looks only through posts on FPN:

https://cse.google.com/cse?cx=016372583718073050395:1rsitsemrpo

(I took the link from the thread https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/228608-f-p-n-google-search/ which was created by watch_art, and is 'pinned' at the top of the 'Fountain Pens & Dip Pens - First Stop' board here.)

If you put the terms 'efnir' and 'black' into the search box, then hit the search button, it will return a list of links to all the 'Extra Fine Nib Ink Reviews' on here by LizEF whose ink names include the term 'black'.

Liz hand-writes her reviews in each ink that she reviews. She includes a video, a scan, and various photos on each review.

Enjoy!

:) Thanks, @Mercian.

Alternately, you can load my inks spreadsheet (linked in all my more recent reviews), filter on the color "Black", and use the links found in the final columns of the sheet to load those reviews of interest.  :D  This will catch even those that don't have "black" in the name.
