Lamy And Midori Question

So I am new to fountain pen usage, and loving it. I have a Lamy Safari pen. I like to use it in my Midori traveler's notebook, but I have an issue with how long it takes the ink to dry. I have to keep a piece of paper between the pages when I close my Midori to keep the ink from transferring. Then if I write one day, and come back to write again the next, the ink will smudge on my hands and fingers as I hold my notebook.

So my question - is there a different kind of ink I can get to use in my pen and not have this issue?

What ink are you using now?

Also might be worth looking at alternate refills. In my Midori Traveller Passport I use one of the sticky plastic pockets on the inside of the front and keep a piece of blotting paper in there for easy use/access

You're looking for something fp users refer to as a "dry ink". The issue is that different inks react differently to different pens, nibs, and paper combinations. That makes it difficult to suggest an ink that might work for you given your combination.

There are some standard dry inks, unfortunately I can't think of any right now. If no one gets back to you with specific response to Lamy pens and Midori papers, just try a search for "dry inks" on the board. People often ask about these, so you should be able to find something. Or just take a look through the ink review section. Or search ink reviews with the keyword "dry inks", and something will turn up. Usually, if the same ink keeps reappearing, that's a pretty good bet that it will work for your combination.

It's not a specific answer, but I hope it helps a bit.

More quick drying ink, more absorbent paper. Dry times on MD, esp. the thin TR refills are long. Great paper unless you are in a rush.

Try Bandit Apple refills. Excellent FP-friendly paper, just as good but different from the Midori refills.

I had the same problem in my Hobonichi journal. Any low-absorbancy paper will have the same issue. At the time I was using Diamine Oxblood and Bilberry inks. I switched to Noodler's Red-Black and Navy, and smudging is almost nonexistent now. Also Noodler's Zhivago has worked well too. I still keep a piece of paper in between fresh pages to catch wet spots, but next-day smudging is a non-issue.

So, definitely try some different inks! I used a couple pages of the journal just for ink testing: Pick an ink whose color you like, and write a single line with it. Blot it, and then go back to the test page the next day and see if it still smudges. If yes? That one is out. If no? You have a winner! :-)

Oh, and I use all Lamy pens in that journal. It's definitely not a pen problem. ;-)

This sounds like an issue with the ink. What ink are you using? I don't have any trouble with that kind of smudging, even with my wettest pens. There are some heavily saturated inks by some boutique makers that just never seem to dry on good quality paper. Some Private Reserve colors are known for this.

Thank you all for the updates and advice. I will now be searching for some dry inks. I had been using the stock ink that came with my pen (from the Lamy company). I'll see what turns up, and let you all know how the results go.

Lamy ink is pretty dry, especially the blue.

My question is what nib size are you using? I love my Traveler's Notebook and don't have any issues unless I'm foolishly using my Neponset (thing's a bloody firehose) on the run. Even my various Lamys don't give me any hassle and I frequently run wet inks in them (Noodler's, Private Reserve, Diamine, Iroshizuku).

I'm using a fine nib.

Additional update to this: I ordered a Lamy converter, and Noodler's Bernanke Black.
