First Nib Replacement!

So, I finally attempted a nib replacement- a Zebra G nib in a Jinhao x450. I think it worked pretty darn well!

Thank you! I was really nervous it might not work (and that my handwriting wouldn't cooperate) but i think it turned out okay. And yeah, it's super fun... now i need to replace more!

Just remember that G nibs will corrode with constant exposure to ink, so if you're gonna do more G nibs, try to do it when you're gonna use them and not leave them sitting around unused a lot.

 

If you're looking for other #6 nibs to try, I have an x750 with a Nemosine nib (off Amazon) and it's fantastic (Nemosine has all the usual sizes and less common .6 and .8 stubs)! Lots of people have also used the Goulet nibs with Jinhaos.

The G nibs are Chrome or Titanium PLATED, not stainless steel. This is why they WILL corrode/rust when kept in constant contact with ink.

Cannot agree more on the corrosion issue: my first G nib on a Jinhao started rusting in 4 days. One other thing to keep in mind it's pretty darn difficult to pull out the nib unit with the G nib; if you decide to go for pliers, beware that the plastic feed cracks super easily.

Did you have to do anything with the feed? Have you tried writing a page or two with no railroading?

congrats, it's a catchy mod...

some "ordinary pens" can suddenly become addictive when you swap in the right nib!

(I just souped up an ebonite Ranga with an Omas 14k nib yesterday... )

I’ve gone WAAAAAY down the rabbit hole doing this sort of thing. I put a Waterman nib into a Montegrappa (that I have to retrieve and place in another pen because the filling mechanism is faulty), and I’ve stuck old 19th century dip nibs in some of my ringtops (a #3 works great if the cap has the headspace) for an experience of flex that no fountain pen can provide.

My therapist doesn’t want me to talk about this, but it’s useful information.
