Montblanc Airbus A380

Something I have wrestled with in the past. If you found a pen that really meant something to you but was not very attractive (ugly) would you buy and use it ?

My answer to that question is no.

I really like the Mb Agatha Christie pen because I enjoyed reading all of her books, and she meant a lot to me as an author. So having the Agatha Christie pen would mean more to me than having some other Writers Editions. But as far as the pen goes, it is actually only a black pen with a rather nice silver 'snake' clip.

So I find it's price is always too rich for my budget. :(

I also liked the idea of having the Shakespeare pen, but I definitely don't like that one enough to buy it.

This Picture of some of the pens in my collection shows the size of this pen compared to some of the other MontBlanc models.

attachicon.gifCollection.jpg

As far as I am concerned it is the best pen in my collection and it is the pen that I generally carry. I love a heavy pen and the weight of this pen will astound you.

This pen's cap alone weighs about as much as an entire MB 149!

When I first saw this pen I was not immediately taken by it, but once I had handled it, I knew that it was a pen that I just had to have! It is a fantastic pen to wright with and the white gold does not show up finger prints that badly so this is the pen that I generally have inked.

Beautiful pens. Thank you for sharing.

"So does the Airbus look a little, or even a very little, like the silver Edson le ?"

In a way I suppose it does look somewhat like the silver Edson LE, it is just much more solid and it weighs more than twice as much as the Edson LE.

I love the Edson, in truth it was the pen that got me interested in pen collecting in the first place, in fact it was my first decent pen was a blue and gold Edson fountain pen.

Although the Edson performs well, it does not in any way match the solidity of the Airbus A380.

To wright with such a pen is an experience to behold! It weighs about twice as much as the Pope Julius II 888 and therefore feels much more solid in the hand.

Even tough it is definitely not the most expensive MontBlanc pen out there, it definitely must be one of the heaviest pens that they have ever created!

It is definitely the most solid pen that I have had the privilege of wrighting with!

If a solid pen is what you want then this is the pen for you, however the one thing that I have to mention is that the nib is rather stiff, it's performance is very similar to that of the Edson in terms of putting ink to paper, but as far as I am concerned it offers a much better wrighting experience due to it's weight and solidity.

The Pope Julius II is a beautiful and very photogenic pen! Another one of my favourites! It is the pen in my collection which most of the people that I know seem to like the most!

You mention the weights of various pens in your reply and I am curious as to the actual heft of the pen in question. Have you actually got scales that could give us an indication of this ? I once owned a Montblanc Marlene Dietrich LE in silver which, although quite feminine in apperance, weighed a lot ! The comparisons are below. One other pen I should have put on the scales prior to selli was the Conway Stewart Grand Exhibition, a monster in all departments that was.

149 about half full of ink = 36.95 gr

146 Vermeil about a quarter full of ink = 49.36 gr

Marlene without convertor or cartridge fitted = 81.42 gr

Hi Pen Nut,

I managed to weigh my pen and here are the results:

The complete pen (inked) Weighed 121 grams as shown in the attached picture.

The cap weighed 42 grams on its own and the pen itself 78 grams.

Now I finally know exactly how much it weighs!

I have attached some pics of the Pope Julius II showing some of the detail on the pen.

These are really nice pics, thanks! I don't imagine they're possible on an iPhone?

No, they were taken with a DSLR.

Though you need to click to see full resolution otherwise it doesn't display as nice as yours when adjusted by FPN for the page

Wow! :yikes:

And I used to think my 62g Tribute was awfully heavy... :D

Can you write with it?

It is rather hefty, but it sure is a pleasure to wright with! It has a good combination of size and weight and offers great stability when weighting. It's heft is most felt when I cary it in my shirt pocket, it has quite a bit of momentum and really lets me know that it's there! It's built like a tank and and definitely the most rugged pen in my collection, that's why I favour it as an every day pen. When I have let some of my colleagues hold it, they have been absolutely stunned by it's weight.

It is definitely the heaviest pen that I have come across!

Never put this bad boy on the scales but do wish I had.......using it posted was madness :)

The gold pen in the second picture is a 146 vermeil which is no 'tiddler' in its own right !

Wow! now that is a really big pen!

That is definitely the biggest pen that I have ever seen a picture of!

What metal is it made of?

The metal overlay is silver done by FPN contibutor 'Truffle Finder' aka Henry Simpole.......

I would agree with Pravda that it's the weight that really makes this pen feel awesome. I've not inked mine yet so can't comment with how it writes. I was thinking of selling it but the photos and everyone's enthusiasm about it make me want to keep it for a while longer......

I also love the A380 - especially having a drink in the bar at 38000 feet :-)
