Montblanc Platinum 149 Obbb

Hello all,

What a wonderful topic. After reading all these posts about OBBB nibs and so on, I recalled a Montblanc 149 with a huge nib that I came across at the Los Angeles Pen Show back in February.

A dealer there had a 149 that had a huge nib on it. I took a few photos with my phone for arother day. I figured that it was some sort of custom nib. Neither of us knew so I just filed it all away. Now I'm thinking that what I saw was perhaps the elusive "signature" nib. It must have been at least a BBBB. Unfortunately the magnification effects in the photos don't help. What do you all think?

This is indeed the signature nib. Found in the bottom drawer of their testers box. It is O6B

Looks like a 1970s version of the nib, based on the feed. I never seem to find one of these for sale. Sigh...

That's probably because it's bespoke $500. Those who get it don't intend to sell their pens

I don't have any OBBB 149's but I love my three OBB's, and the 75th Anniversary pen (centre) certainly writes more broadly than the other two variants, it's more like an OBBB. The pen on the left is a 1950's 14c nib and it's my favourite of the three, it's very flexible. Here's a comparison picture for you.

Hi Tom!!!

Staples is a chain of stationary and office supply stores.

They sell everything a "modern" office needs. Unfortunately they stopped carrying Montblanc in the 1990's. That was a dark day, I thought.

Take care!

Matt

Staples ARC system is bound by discs rather than the more conventional rings & allows for customization while less prone to tearing or having pages fall out.

Hello,

Any left-handed folks using an OBBB or BBB? I'm a left-handed over-writer and I currently have a 149 with BB and one with an OBB. Hopefully I'll get a chance to write with an OBBB or BBB soon because after seeing them all here. I'm on the lookout for one. I used to think that having a very wide nib would be a problem, but as I've learned, it's not necessarily so.

I find it quite easy to write with my BB and of the two, I prefer it most. The Oblique nibs can be a bit finicky at times with nib alignment. I find I have to orient and hold the pen just so or else it comes off the sweet spot and starts skipping. Thanks to all who posted because I'll certainly be looking for an OBBB or BBB.

Ed, the last gentleman in my life was a left-handed overwriter who preferred my broader nibs for their stability. He preferred less saturated inks such as Herbin's original line for their faster drying times.

Thank you for the wonderful pictures. I would be very grateful if you could kindly provide some writing samples using your OBB.

Hi Tom. The problem with finding an OBBB nib used is the lack of stickers and documents with most used pens. Since MB does not mark their nibs, and each one can differ in width, how would you really know the difference between OBB and OBBB or BB and BBB? That is why I went and bought a brand new 149 so I could be sure to get the OBBB I wanted.

Yes, you can take a used 149 in and ask for a nib swap to O3B, but I think that now runs over $300 USD.

Yes Montblanc sells any nib for $380 and let you keep the old one. When I wanted to exchange one of mine after the six weeks period that's what they suggested. I opted to sell one of my old ones and buy a new pen entirely.

~ Pravda:

In each of the three instances wherein I purchased a nib for pens — 2 Classiques and one 149 — which I'd owned for well over one year, the replacement nibs were what I received.

That's all.

Montblanc China never offered to return the original nibs. As I saw the packages being opened in the boutique, I'm certain that the original nibs weren't sent, in each of the three cases.

Thank you for mentioning that you were given the original nib as well as the ones you'd purchased.

FPN's Montblanc section continues to educate a less-experienced user like yours truly. That's nice.

When I had my 'issue' regarding the 90 years replacement, they told me we're happy to order you a new nib and you can keep the old one to use on any of your other pens. The problem was it was the only red gold 149 I had so it was not a good deal for me; that's why I ended up buying the Platinum so that I can order the O3B.
