New Zealand Pass Around Ink Sample Library?

Hey team NZ.

How many millilitres do you want in the vials? I’ve got some 7ml vials from Goulet and they usually do 2ml samples for their inks. I guess the question is would you rather have:

a.) 5ml samples and each person can take 1-2ml to try things out. Something that can be used a few times; or

b.) 2ml samples, where if you think it is interesting you nab it and replace it with something equally interesting.

I'm in camp A, would be good to have a try of each one then we all get a look at each one first time around. I'm keen to add to it as it travels around as well.

Do you think we should list the inks we have, then if someone has a "special" request we can cover it or would you want to go lucky dip?

Yeah I think I’m leaning more towards having samples that a number of people can use and try out. Though that means that spot in the box is likely to be taken up for some time. Might as well have an in depth sample library that everyone can use I guess!

I think we go lucky dip and put in something you think others will want to try. If there happens to be an ugly shade of brown that no one touches after a few rounds then perhaps replace with something more interesting? We could always set up a group google doc with available inks later and then accommodate special requests or trades etc. What do you think?

Hmm yeah my only concern about the fixed library samples plan would be that it could be a bit stagnant after youve done one round - nothing else left to try! Unless we find new people or let the box travel overseas for giggles and see if/what comes back haha.

Sounds good, I think it would be good if people add to it and as some empty others can replace with something new

Overseas could be cool, I met a couple of FPN people last year in the states and I think they'd be keen at some point to join it

I think the problem with that is postage costs, I think these things are probably kept to internal postage.

Maybe US or UK members would be interested in something similar?

Yeah the overseas option doesnt really work out economically as in both in the UK and US there are a few places that have a huge range of samples available at $1-$2 a piece so that would be a better use of the cash than spending it all on overseas postage.

Though if we do get sick of the box here and everyone else is keen I would still entertain sending it overseas somewhere where it could do the rounds for a few months/years somewhere interesting and the locals can pass it around cheaply. I think you'd also need to put some pineapple lumps in it just to hear the overseas WTH? reactions haha. If it could come back fairly restocked of goodies then that would make it worth it. New Zealand Post offers us an address in the UK and USA which we could always use for this and it is ~$23NZD to get the box home. If the box had changed hands say 10+ times then I’d be happy paying that say once a year to get it home. But let’s get this thing out around NZ to start with!

On its way to you kelvinkeh as of this morning. I put a decent volume of ink in the vials so you dont have to feel bad if you want to try the same ink in 2 different pens :-) Enjoy! Let us know what you like and dislike!

What do you guys think? Keep the box say up to a month and pass on when you are ready? Might as well spend some time trying it all out - suspect it will take a while :D

Perhaps Australia might be an option? (If you want it to go overseas) Since It is one of the closest country to New Zealand... postage won't be so expensive :D

Hey Redscarves, always room for our Australian brothers. We consider it our West Island  Think it was about ~$13NZD to get the box to Australia so not too bad really. If there were some more aussies at the other end we might be able to make the pass around work easier.

Got it! I'll fill up a couple of pens tonight. In terms of new ink, should I add a random selection or should we list what we have and people can choose?

Yeah lets do both and keep it fun. Do you want me to setup a password protected google doc we can all access and we can share inks / emails etc Then we can also take up PJO's suggestion of being able to trade surplus inks and keep in contact?

What did you choose first kelvinkeh? Hope your hands arent too inky haha

I have to admit, my fingers were quite colourful at the end of the night. The two I currently have inked are shown in the samples below. Ive started filling a few vials now, and will do more in the weekend.

I'll list the inks I have tomorrow and we can take it from there :)

Looks good kelvinkeh, please you like the Sailor inks, they also have quite a nice sheen to them when used on good paper so make sure you try that too :)

I'm envisaging you in the company of others trying to explain away your technicoloured stained hands on a freak accident with a traveling ink library :D
